What do you do for a living Mad Phil? You've mentioned a well equipped garage before I think?

I repair Catering Equipment by trade but have a long history of other things including electronics engineer & motorbike mechanic many years ago always still learning about things though.

Bikes I love though & would really like to be able to work on them all day but nowadays with the electronics etc its very easy to come unstuck.

Workshop is about 1200 sq ft. Stainless Steel benches, parts washer, blasting cabinet, Twin post car ramps, tools & general work crap.

Still not got a bike lift but loads of front & rear paddock stands & just looking at putting a platform on the car ramps to work on the bikes.

Soooo, can I be your friend?

I would love to work as a motorcycle mechanic myself. Long term the plan is to do it, but at the moment I have to stick with what I do now (which is terribly boring.)

ps. You're only 35 mins from me.

I do all the work myself, but I'm very limited on space (3 bikes in a single garage.) I'm getting proper lights and plug sockets installed soon and then I want to get a better work bench and maybe put in more shelves to make better use of the space. I painted the garage floor with some grey paint stuff that was supposedly made for it, but it peels up as soon as it gets wet. If I park the Wee in the garage after a wet ride the paint is stuck to the tyres the next morning, I need to get rid of this stuff and find a better way to seal the floor so I can work inside and not worry about soaking it with oil and such.

You should come along for a ride with Hutchie, longman, myself and whoever else feels like it sometime before the good weather is out :thumb:

Yes, sounds a good idea..

The floor.... With mine I screwed down some ply sheets & painted that, works a treat & about £15 a sheet.

Put some metal plates down in areas you lift or put stands on, makes it a bit warmer to work on too :thumb:

I saw some interlocking rubber floor cover/protection in the local ProTyre. That looks like it will do the trick, but haven't had a look around to see what it costs. Should also keep the cold out and it's can handle just about any chemical you can throw at it. Plus, if you move you can pick it up and take it along, always a good thing.

I would imagine only one bit would have gone if the other gears work...

Seems a big parts bill to have before a strip down has even occurred.

Gaskets, seals & faulty bit surely no more than £100 ??

I'm having the front disc's, pads, front sprocket, chain, plugs, filters, etc done while he's at it.  I'm relocating down to Derby in the next couple of weeks so I need to get it back on the road soonish.

Are there many chaps living in that neck of the woods?  I may actually get along to a meet at some point

Yep, Derby is about an hour from me, Hutchie and longman is close too. There's a fair few others, most people going to Stromtrekkers II should be from around these parts. You can even join us for some Moto Gymkhana :thumb:

I've stripped the bike down to the point where the engine is ready to come out,  I then blinked and lost my nerve after speaking to a few chaps that mentioned 'technically' how scary a bike gearbox was to rebuild.

So I'm taking it (in its disassembled state) to a bike mechanic chap that will strip it down and rebuild the gearbox and reassemble the bike, while giving it a good service.

My parts bill will be somewhere around £500. Labour will be somewhere around £200 or so.  It's not particularly cheap, but since I got the bike for a steal, I don't mind so much ( And in the few months I've had her, I've chosen to keep her forever  :shy: )

Awww Love at first ride :) Bless :obscene-drinkingchug:

This thread is somewhat 'antique' and may be about as likely to come back as this chap...

Could I suggest doing a little introduction first, then pop in a new thread about your gearbox.

I would love to work as a motorcycle mechanic myself.

I work full time as a motorcycle mechanic and yes, its a dream job if you are into bikes like I am.
There is a major "but" though.... If you are employed or own a repair shop the business side of things take over regarding what type of work you take in. Our shop in london is always busy and there is no way we would take in a gearbox job as its not cost effective for the shop or the customer. yes I could do the job but in the case of our friend with gear box issues its easier and cheaper to swap the motor.
There are mechanics who own businesses out there that specialise in specific types of mechanics but tend to charge a lot more as its a time consuming job. Bikes are getting more reliable these days and you would be rather unlucky to encounter a gearbox issue, this is why jobs like that are very rare in many bike dealerships or repair shops plus most people would shit themselves over the repair cost.
As a bike mechanic you're brain has to take over as to what you can achieve compared to what you really would like to do as far as the job is concerned and often this means condeming customers bikes because its not cost effective to fix.
To be honest its a great job and I love it but has many ups and downs like most jobs, if you are looking at it full time good luck to you .  :

#Cough... My 4th gear exploded in the box on the on ramp to the motorway. Engine totaled. Bike stripped and sold off.

I was not about to strip the engine out and rebuild a highish mileage bike with loads of issues that needed sorting... She really had seen better days. If it was in a better shape I may have taken a punt and stripped it. Sadly a newer more powerful bike was sourced in 6 hours. So the strom died became an organ donor. I was thinking Viking send off but Swansea marina didn't like that idea.

Like I said unlucky,  Even with a high mileage motor. Your bike would have been a classic example of swapping motors being the cheapest option .
