Help! 3rd Gear has disappeared...
« on: June 23, 2011, 10:46:38 »
Right chaps,

Need a steer in the right direction.  While driving from Dover having just got off the Ferry, my 3rd Gear has disappeared.  Its abit like going into neutral where 3rd should be.

Has anyone had a sinilar problem?  All the other gears work as normal.  I've done about 1000 miles over the past week or so.  I need to drive back to Scotland tomorrow and would like to have 3rd back if possible...

Searching in Oily Rag gives several posts with similar issues.

Have you tried cleaning and lubing (WD40) the linkages to see if they are the culprit?

I've adjusted the clutch cables, aswell as the gear linkages and re-tightened the chain, so I'm at a loss?

Its rather strange, one minute it was there, the next it was litterally gone and like putting it into neutral.

Any ideas?

Did u get it back?!

I had this problem periodically where I lose a gear and it goes in to neutral, the resolution for me was on shifting gear to actually tuck my toe under the gear shift and lift my whole foot up. I wasn't being firm enough on the gear shift. May not be anything mechanical at all....... I still get it periodically when I don't shift hard enough....... hope that helps.

It just appears to have disappeared?

It isn't there either going up, or down the box...  I fear a rebuild may be in order  :bawl:

Sounds not very good. If its clutch or gear linkage it usually does it in all or several gears!!!
Just 3rd gear sounds more likely to be the actual gearbox to me.

Doesn't sound good.... sounds like it is a gear box issue then... not sure what else it could be :( Keep us posted.

Now I seem to be getting a 'tinkle' / 'squeeking' noise?

Any ideas?  Sounds like its coming from the gear box, while riding in any gear.  (almost like 3rd gear is just loose on the shaft?)

Take it back to the dealer? It's probably the safest option for you now.

If only I could take it back.  I bought it in a private sale.  I suspect it has more to do with my riding than the bike.

She's at 38,000 miles.  Still goes, so I'm just going to ride it until it dies then replace the engine.

Do you still have the missing 3rd gear?

We have a 16-Tonne DAF truck at work and one of the gears has shattered and fallen to the bottom of the 'box... :limp:  :limp:  :limp:  :limp:

To say it sounds bad is an understatement....

I've stripped the bike down to the point where the engine is ready to come out,  I then blinked and lost my nerve after speaking to a few chaps that mentioned 'technically' how scary a bike gearbox was to rebuild.

So I'm taking it (in its disassembled state) to a bike mechanic chap that will strip it down and rebuild the gearbox and reassemble the bike, while giving it a good service.

My parts bill will be somewhere around £500. Labour will be somewhere around £200 or so.  It's not particularly cheap, but since I got the bike for a steal, I don't mind so much ( And in the few months I've had her, I've chosen to keep her forever  :shy: )

Gearboxes can be a bit scary, the trick is to know what you're doing before you take it apart (meaning RTFM first.) As long as you keep a calm head, work slowly and make sure you know exactly how you took it apart so you can put it back like that again then it should be a breeze.

Let us know what happens, I'm very curious about what has caused the fault. If you can get parts they replaced back and give us some pictures all the better :thumb:

I would imagine only one bit would have gone if the other gears work...

Seems a big parts bill to have before a strip down has even occurred.

Gaskets, seals & faulty bit surely no more than £100 ??
