12 month service.
« on: March 06, 2011, 19:29:49 »
My 10 plate 650X is due its 12 month service - which appears to be no more than an oil change with everything else being an "inspection" (not that I believe for one second anything will get as much as a glance from the grease monkey!  :fix: ).  Before I phone for a price, has anyone any idea roughly which side of £100 I'm looking at?   :bawl:

I paid £95 for a 4000 mile service in february, when I went to pick the bike up I asked how much for a 8000 miler and was quoted £140. As soon as the bike is out of warranty I'll service it myself.

I've done my own for years - the only exception being I use my friendly dealer to check the valve clearances when they are due. Nothing else, just clearances. Everything else is straight forward and saves a fortune!
I accept its different if it's brand new and you need to keep the warranty but once out of warranty do you really want to pay someone £50 an hour to grease brake pins and gear linkages? Write in the service book what you have done and when, keep receipts and in my experience it makes no difference to selling price when you want to change.

Can't agree more!  Future buyers will probably take more notice of a well recorded self service history - backed by well kept receipts - than a dealer stamp in a service record!  If an owner's prepared to go to the trouble of keeping a good record of work undertaken, then they've probably taken better overall care of the bike than any dealer tech would've done!

I buy Filtrex filters off Ebay for £5.99, the washer is something like £0.40 or something similar. 4 litres of good brand fully synthetic oil will cost you less than £40 (by some margin.) Lots of people are happy with the Halfords semi synth 10W40 and that's even cheaper. No wonder people complain that dealers rob them.

If anyone round here want their bike serviced- PM me, I'll have a few bottles of HobGoblin off you and the cost of your choice of oil/filter/washer and plugs and bits as needed.
Any if you ask nicely I may refrain from drinking the beer while servicing your bike.

My DL1000 cost me £140 for the 4,000 miler. It must be similar to what your 650x requires I would think.

Used to do all my own servicing and repair work, and it was good fun and I learned a lot too. Saving money makes you feel good. However, these days I just love riding it and cleaning it and I don't really get much time to do much else. My GT version has loads of luggage space which is why I bought her. I rarely do anything much to it though. I'm lucky...I have a really good dealer and I can find the money to pay him to look after it. He does a good job and doesn't mess people or their bikes about (Parkinsons Motorcycles of Colchester). I took mine for it's 7,500 service and watched most of the time during the service. The workshop blokes are sociable types and good at what they do.

The bike was wheeled in, seat removed and tank propped up, and the checklist started. But first a check for error codes by plugging the ecu in. All was well, then new plugs, a TPS, then a check of the TBS. It was out slightly so this was corrected. Oil and filter changed, engine coolant was changed as the bike was a low mileage two year old, chain and sprockets checked, tyres and pressures checked, head bearings too. Brakes cleaned and checked, lights and all the other electrical stuff checked. Everything that needed it was lubed with grease or oil. Then a complete nut and bolt tightness check. Finally, after re-assembly a road test. The bike was brought back into the workshop however and the seat removed. The bike appeared to be running a tad too lean, so a new ecu map was loaded to richen the first third of throttle setting. Then another road test. The map incidentally was a FOC Suzuki map being loaded to any 1000cc bike that needs it. All dealers seem to have this map. As it happens it was then running a tad too rich after that and so it was changed a few days later for a leaner version but slightly richer than the original Suzuki factory map. Again this aspect was FOC. The bike then ran superbly and much better than it did even when new.

Total cost of the service was £185. Considering the time it took and materials used that's pretty good in my book. I'm an ex car tech and we would have charged much more in labour for that amount of time expended. The main thing is they did a superb job. It was the last service too before the warranty ran out so I wanted to be sure everything was OK. I'm happy. But, if you need to save money or just want to do it yourself, the Stroms are really good bikes to do DIY on. So enjoy!

I'll happily concur with Commander.  Parkinson's did my first 600 mile service and I was happy with their work.  They also seem to have no objections to you watching them work either which I value, even if I don't want to stand there the whole time.  Always a bit suspicious of places who don't want you anywhere near the workshop - Health & Safety?  More like you'd be horrified by the barely trained 16 year old kids pulling your bike apart without a clue to be charged £80 an hour.

First service cost me £88.75 all in and I'll be happily heading back there as the 4k comes up in the next month or so.

I don't know what's going on in your part of Scotland Stuart but £140-£170 is taking the "piece"...

The issue about getting the bike serviced to comply with warranty requirements is a bit vague. Suzuki dealers would have you believe that the warranty is voided if they don't do the work and that is why they can get away with charging you an arm and leg for usually just changing the oil and filter (and if you're lucky kicking the tyres as well!). Some years ago this "closed shop" servicing to keep your warranty was tested in a court case and it was concluded that if the person doing the service work could be shown be competent than the warranty must stand. However, proving competency and then getting warranty work done might prove difficult with an unhelpful dealer. Personally I would get the first service done by your Suzuki dealer and make sure any warranty issues get sorted out and then get following work done by a competent mechanic if you can find one! Better still do it yourself. Get a Haynes manual and basic tools are all you need (except for valve clearances), save yourself a lot of money and you'll learn a lot about how the bike works which may be very helpful in the future.

Had the 4k done on Tuesday.  Â£149 is a fair bit for a minimal service,  but the way I look at it the 'loan' bike accounts for £50 or so of that (more if you actually had to pay for it), and its always interesting to have something else for a day.

If I look at it that way I can live with the cost, but I still get my car serviced for less so may well go the DIY route when the Strom is out of warranty.
