3 weeks ago my 2022 650 was delivered. The weather had been pretty decent, so I've done 1,150 miles to date. All of which have been around Derbyshire and Staffordshire's twisty roads.
I've owned over 30 bikes including (Suzuki - wise) a GSXR600, 2x DRZ400SM's, plus gen 2 and 3 SV650's. I know and love this engine.
Initial thoughts:
I was a touch disappointed at first. The bike felt a bit top heavy, with soggy suspension, and it liked to run wide in the corners. However, I was sort of expecting this. I've acclimatised to it it now, and fitting a rear Nitron shock has certainly helped. I'm awaiting uprated linear fork springs for my weight, which should also make a big difference.
I've never owned an 'Adventure' type bike before. The screen really disappoints - none of the 3 settings seem to help. I've read much on here re aftermarket ones, but to be honest they look pretty ugly to me. As I'm not a tourer as such, I've removed the screen now. It sort of feels like a big naked instead! I don't mind at all...Now looks like an old KTM Superduke from the front!
The seller pulled a bit of a fast one on me. I bought it remotely (so ultimately, it's on me), but let's just say, he was selective in his choice of photos. There was quite a bit of corrosion/paint loss in the usual places - starter motor, hose clips, clutch, gen and water pump covers... yet not visible on the photos. Ah well, not a trick I'd pull, but even after 30 odd bikes you live and learn. My 2 SV's both had a touch of engine flake/corrosion, but less than this!
I've invested in a full set of genuine GB engines covers (£205 rather than the £60 Chinese copies). The fit and finish is excellent. They look good and fit perfectly - whilst hiding 90% of the mess.
Mechanically A1 - 4 Suzuki services in 6k miles.
Now that I'm used to the bike though, I'm really enjoying it.
The seating position is 'commanding'. It's comfy (although I can see why people lower the pegs).
The fuel range is amazing (filled up today with 221 miles on the trip showing, stating 45 miles remaining).
The engine as ever, is a delight, as is the box.
The dash layout (other than my old Honda SP1) has to be my favourite ever. Really well set out, like the little extra touches - Volts and external temp, and the big sweeping tacho.
It will soak up the miles effortlessly. So after a little buyer's remorse, I've grown into it.
I've got a rear hugger on order, and I'm keeping an eye out for one of those Suzuki plastic engine covers that are fitted to the XT to protect the front engine lower level. Other than that, it will be how I want it.
I usually quickly rack up about 10K miles on a bike, then move on. Always been like that, but I can see why these bikes get the praise they are due.
