Water spraying from exhaust
« on: March 22, 2025, 20:15:36 »
Hi, I've just bought a 2019 DL250 V-Strom with 5008 miles on it. Looks pristine, no scratches, bumps or signs of dropping. It is currently stored in a cool (but not freezing) brick garage. I've started it up tonight to let it tick over for a while and gave it a few blips of the throttle.

When doing this I noticed that water is spraying out of the exhaust but not from the upper end of it. Rather, it is coming out of the lowest part of the tailpipe next to where the rear brake pedal pivots.

Is this something normal on this bike. I can't see any damage or wear on the bottom end of the rear can. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you have a leak in the exhaust connection at the very least.
As for the water, have you run it much at all since buying it?
Could be as daft as someone jet washed it before selling it and got a load of water in the end can which has pooled at the lowest point.
Since you likely want to whip the end can/link pipe off to reseal that connection with exhaust paste, you'll then see if it's just water sat in the lowest point or if something more serious is occurring, although I can't imagine how coolant would make it that far without the bike running rough as all hell.

Thanks for the prompt reply.

In answer to your question I've not run it all yet apart from the ride home (2 miles about 2 weeks ago). I don't think it is coolant, there is no odour and it is a clear liquid. I'll have to give in and lie down on the garage floor and take a look at the exhaust joints. It's in for it's MOT in a couple of weeks so no doubt the dealer will let me know if something is awry.

Not many DL250 owners on the forum so I'll post my findings and keep you informed.

My Air cooled Yamaha 600 did that when I started it the other day after it was unused for a few months. It was condensation and the exhaust gases propelled it out.
After a 10 mile run around the block the end can got hot enough to evaporate it off and it stopped dripping.

Lots of bike exhausts used to have small blow holes on the lowest part of the pipe to prevent premature corrosion. I don't know if this is the case on the 250?
Have a good look at where the water is coming from it could just be from the down pipe silencer join if there is one.
As per the input above it's probably just condensation, bikes need riding.

I'm going with condensation. The bike was run for a very short while getting it home, it's been stood in a cool garage.
The start up & short run won't have done it any favours either. Although the temps have increased a touch over the last few weeks.
Get it out & give it a good run, once the exhaust is hot enough it will 'boil' the condensation off.
Have you not noticed lots of cars on a winters morning pouring white smoke/steam out the exhaust & dripping water too?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I took a video of the lower part of the end can and it does look like a manufactured hole in the bottom. I took the bike out for an hour and no water spraying when I got home.

When a petrol engine is started from cold you often see water coming out of the exhaust. If you have a petrol car, start it on a cold day when the engine is cold too and you will see what I mean. Once the engine has warmed up it will stop, it's normal. If it had anything to do with coolant I think you would smell it.   :thumb:

That little hole is there to let the water out. Otherwise the exhausts  would rot.

If it helps my GSX-8S has a blow hole in the top of the exhaust. If it hasn't been used for a while the condensation exits this hole when reving the engine from a cold start.
