VStrom XT1000 Code 46 help please? exhaust valve?
« on: March 11, 2025, 16:21:15 »
Good day everyone. I have a code 46 that has appeared over the last few days on my 2018 1000xt, I managed to put it into dealer mode ( thanks to Dr Vstrom) to get the code and I believe it is the exhaust valve servo? I've sprayed it with wd40 and it looks to be turning freely when you rev the bike, not took the end can off though to see if the flap inside is actually moving.
Can anyone help with this please?, I've read that the cables can be adjusted but not sure how to do this, the cables do not seem slack at all though.
The bikes starts and rides perfectly but the F1 and orange engine light is annoying.
Also heard that there is an emulator you can purchase to bypass this valve?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I'm sorry I have no specific knowledge of this but HealTech manufacture an Exhaust Servo Eliminator.
Good luck.

Mine sticks all the time, I just remove the end can, spray some WD40 or GT85 etc and that does it for another while. Sometimes just turning it on and off a few times clears the f1 light.  I'll bet the first day I take it out again next month it'll stick big time.
One day I will buy a servo eliminator but as it always clears not just yet!

Not had a V , but had the same on my gen 1 fazer 1000, got in the habit of spraying the valve with wd40 every time I put it in the garage ( 5 secs  ) and never had anymore problems.
You need to pop the can off to check the valve is moving,it could be stuck or the cables worn/snapped or the servo giving up.
If any of those things  is gone ,the healtech elininator is the way to go.But you will need to lockwire the flap in the open position if using the eliminator.
Needs sorting to get rid of the light, while it is on for the servo you will not be warned of any further problems if they should  ( doubtful  but...) arise.

  thanks for all for the help and advice, great news! After spraying the valve yesterday with wd40 and leaving overnight the code has now gone! I did check the actual flap was moving freely by removing the end can and it moves as it should.
I will look into the eliminator though and also remove the whole servo unit (thanks Upt North for the link) as I can see it coming back in the future as others have mentioned.
Has anyone ever fitted the Healtech servo eliminator to their Vstrom?
I see they are an american company but I'm sure they will ship to the uk.
I will report back once I find out the full cost with shipping to the uk.
Thanks again everyone.

Glad you are sorted :thumb:
Healtech is actually a Hungarian company, here is the link for the UK importer should you need it.

Thank you nigel s, just ordered. The Eliminator was £57.99 plus £9.95 postage for next day delivery, standard delivery was £5.95 but I chose next day. In case anyone wants to know the model number ESE you need for the 2018 DL1000XT is ESE-S05 and confirmed by Healtech, please check for any other models are there are variants.
I plan to remove the servo, cables etc once I fit the ESE and will let you know how I get on.
nigel s you mentioned I should lockwire the flap open? Any ideas on how I could do this would be a great help as I've never used lockwire. Should I just remove the cables to the valve and lockwire the valve open?
Thanks.

The flap needs to be in the open position and fixed in place after the cables are removed. Lockwire  ( the stuff they use in racing ) is often used but any stainless steel wire will do. Even an old push bike brake/control cable inner, at a push, something heat proof that will not rust.
Fix the wire to a fixed spot , the cover mounting bolt maybe , then it is all hidden.

:ty: nigel s, the lockwire worked a treat. Eliminator now installed, Servo and cables removed, flap fully open and lockwired in place. I would definitely recommend Healtech, arrived next day as promised.
A simple job to do and if anyone is thinking of doing this go ahead and no more worries of issues with the flap in future. A big bonus is that the bike sounds much deeper and nicer especially at tickover. I noticed that with the standard setup the flap is barely open at tickover, also it might just be me but the acceleration feels more crisper on pulling away?
Also removed the side pannier carriers today, I did not realise they were so heavy and the bike looks better without them. I only use the topbox so no need to carry them around all the time.
Thanks again everyone.
