jerky throttle 2010
« on: February 14, 2025, 17:53:45 »
How does everyone find the throttle response on the 2010's? I find mine to be a little off at low throttle openings, a little jerky. Is this just the way they are or should I be doing something to make it better? Under load or closed throttle it's great. Does balancing the throttles or anything else help?

To me, there could be a few things that could cause this.  I would start with the tests that are free.
But first, download a copy of the K7 Wee Service Manual from the downloads section, if you don't already have this manual.

1) Check on how tight the throttle cables are adjusted. Also check for binding thtottle rods, that are may be catching on the airbox / airbox clamp / etc. You will have to remove some tupperware and lifting the fuel tank to see the throttle cam operation - https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php?topic=7566.0
2) check the thottle body vacuum nipple covers for any cracks or bad seal.
3) check that the exhaust pipe doesn't have any exhaust leaks. There have been some reports of the exhaust clamp rusting off, causing the bike to stumble / run lean.
4) check the throttle position sensor (TPS) setting. Need help? Have a look at https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,19669.0.html  By re-adjusting the rpm, so that minus sign in the -C00 dealer mode display moves to the upper level of the C00, to a different rpm range. See whether there is any change in the throttle response.  Don't forget to set the TPS to the correct rpm after the test. Note that there have been cases the TPS is fine when cold, but only fails once the TPS is hot.
5) check the TBS - https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,5731.0.html

Many of the above points have been posted on youtube, either under SV or V-Strom
Good luck. Let me know the outcome.

Fab, that's just what I needed. Might be a couple of weeks before I'm riding it regular again as there is still too much salt on the roads but will come back with my findings.

Well after a good service of filters, oil, plugs, coolant and electrics and put back together. Throttle cable adjusted and a cable and pipe pulled clear of the secondary linkage on the throttle bodies, which had been touching, the bike seems to run well and the throttle a lot less jerky. Haven't checked TPS or TB balance yet, that will be 2nd part of my servicing.
Afaik the healtech obd tool can turn off the ISC and set the idle manually to help with the TB balance, otherwise the ISC will auto adjust to cover any inbalance?
The bike has less than 10k miles so will be interesting to see if anything needs adjusting. To my ear it could be a little smoother at idle.

To my knowledge, from K7 - L1 the Wee makes use of an ISC (idle speed control).
I would expect that if there is a problem with the ISC, the fault indicator would flag you and when in dealer mode the code C40 would be displayed.
There is a procedure to reset the ISC on these models. The steps for resetting the ISC are discussed in https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/how-to-check-idle-speed.252954/ and in https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=16693.0.
Let me know how things turn out.
