Second Hand V Strom 800's
« on: November 14, 2024, 21:16:16 »
Hi,
I've been stuck for a while with the dilemma as to whether to swap my second generation 650 for either of the 800's, I'm erring towards the DE at the moment.  One thing that has struck me over the last few weeks of searching E bay and AutoTrader is what appears to be quite a lot of used 800's (especially DE's) available with ridiculously low mileages, as in a few hundred miles despite some being well over 12 months old and most look too pristine to be ex demo bikes. Are people finding them a bit marmite and getting shut quickly? All the reviews seem to be positive, but I don't want to drop a clanger and regret parting with my 650. Might be nothing, though I can't recall the same situation with other new models in the past.

Cheers.

Thinking along the same lines myself, wouldn't fancy the spoked tubed wheels on the de model,
More power and better brakes are the big attractions for me.
2nd gen 650 is a hard bike to part with though. There does seem to be a lot of very low mileage bikes for sale alright, likely many are demo models.

A few of them have likely come out of Completely Motorbikes since it went belly up in October.

The market is slow and it's not going to pick up anytime soon. Money's tight, or so they say. I saw a delivery mileage alloy wheel 800 reduced by over 4000 squid.
I think it's simply over supply and they need to create some cash flow. They could get cheaper yet, not just the 800's.
It can't be down to socialism, they said it would get better and I don't think they meant cheap bikes.

I don't know anything about this TransAlp, but it isn't just Suzi's.

As someone who changed his gen2 (after nearly 11 years ownership) to the 800 RE I would say go for it. I don't regret it for one minute.
It was a difficult call to make at the time, after all those years & 58k miles the bike was still brilliant, but the time had come.
I didn't want the DE, too high & tubed tyres, the 1050 was also too high for me.
Go & get a test ride on one & make your own mind up though.  :thumb:
No idea why bikes are hitting the 2nd hand market so quickly, but as Upt North says, it's not just Suzukis.

I wonder if more people are buying bikes remotely without really testing them properly first and therefore more are hitting the second hand market quickly.
Having spoken to my local, used to be, Suzuki dealer, they did say that the OEMs are demanding that dealers buy in more and more stock to keep the OEMs cashflow good. If the models don't sell and then have to be knocked down, it's on the dealer not the OEM to take the hit.
Not sure how true that is, could just be the dealer bitching because sales aren't as good. Either way, the 800 is a really nice bit of kit to ride, I tested one off road at ABR Festival last year and it's a very accomplished bit of kit*. If deals are out there then perhaps it's the time to strike.

* Too refined for me, I like a bit of rough ;)

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll hold off for now and wait for the second/ third year production run bikes to become available second hand. Desperate to have one and it's inevitable that I will, I just don't want to break the golden rule of buying something early in it's production life. I only did it once with a Suzuki Ignis and it turned out to be a right bag of **ite and totally not fit for purpose.  :yukk:, (not that I think the 800 is)

Hi

I did exactly the same as Barbel Mick, my 650 Gen2 was at 137k miles and it was a wrench to sell it, but the new owner is very happy, as I am with my new
(in Jan 24) RE.

I have over 13k miles on it, and its been a joy to ride!

Two trips to Spain and one to Switzerland/Scotland and France, great fun!

Test ride the bike and you will see what Barbel and I mean!

Cheers

I think that at the moment all makes of bikes are going through  the same thing ...high prices new then second hand they drop like a stone . My local dealer was saying that the internet is the biggest problem because you get a dealer that puts there demo model on bike trader at a crazy low price and that sets the price for the second hand market . If you notice when you come to trade in first thing they do is get on line and look what your bike is fetching on bike trader , and the new euro 5 + regs coming soon don't help 🤷‍♂️

I was talking to my local Honda dealer and they have to register all the current NC750x before the end of the year so this will have an effect on the used value of that bike.
Going to keep my 800 for at least another year before maybe looking at a retro type bike just for one up riding.
