rear shock
« on: October 14, 2024, 18:16:52 »
Hi there all.
when I do my trips 2 up the standard rear suspension is not up to the job this can cause the bike foot pegs to hit the ground on bends .last trip the shock bottomed out and didn't come back up again until it was ridden 1 up .
So my question is how do I fix this problem ,ime guessing change the shock but what one will do the job,
Regards Pete

I have got this available.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/186692729283?_skw=Suzuki+V-Strom+650+%282012+-+2015%29+YSS+Rear+Shock+Absorber

This is the description on the e-bay ad.
"This YSS shock fits a V-Strom 650 2012 - 2015. It is almost brand new, it was only on the bike for a month & has done 1007 miles in that time. It comes fitted with a spring suited to the 'heavier' rider, or suitable if you carry a pillion. It will also include a lighter spring if required for the 'lighter' rider."

This shock does not have 'remote' preload. You can still adjust the preload, but it's with a bar turning the threaded adjuster ring.
To be fair it's one of the reasons I changed it for a Nitron. It's a bit awkward on the 650 to get the bar in between the frame to get at the adjuster ring. Not difficult, just a bit awkward.

Nice looking shock Mick.
If it was for a later model I wouldn't let the pre loader bother me, who adjusts them once set anyway.

Hi Mick, do you know if that shock you have for sale would fit a 2009 DL650?

Sorry it was sold on E-Bay last night.
But in answer to your question .... I can't say for certain that it would have.

@Gillie76,  have you considered using a good condition 2nd hand shock from 1st gen Vee on your K9 Wee?

I replaced my K6 Wee's shock with a good condition shock from a Vee. The Vee shock is slightly longer than the DL650 shock.  https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=12233.msg449683#msg449683 has a pix to show the length difference between the two shocks.

If you want to have your shock rebuilt, have a look at advice in https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=42457.0

For Nitron,
https://www.Nitron.co.uk/buy-online/motorcycles/Suzuki/DL650-v-strom
The Ntr1 is what I have .
For rebuilding the std shock , I use MCT, but the number has changed  since I posted it in Gerts referenced post,

Hi Gert, thanks for your post. I had no idea that you could put a vee shock on a wee.
My current original shock seems in good condition for its age, presuming it's still the original. I just find the suspension a bit on the soft side for my 105kg weight. Common problem as you know.

Nigel S, yeah a Nitron shock would be great 🤩

I can't believe the price now for a simple shock, £500 plus vat and an extra £220 for remote preload!
In 2019 I paid £550 all in for my Wilbers with remote.

@Gillie76, I weigh more than you, so the Vee shock will work well for the weight that you posted. The spring has an exta coil when compared to number of coils on the old Wee shock.

When on the center stand, you will notice that with the Vee shock, the wheel clearance from the ground is slightly less than with the previous Wee shock.  There is still enough clearance to remove the rear wheel.

On the plus side, for your 105kg weight you may have to set the Vee shock sag to below normal. To me, the Vee shock is equivalent to installing a stronger spring on the Wee shock.
Another option is to have a stronger spring installed on the existing shock. Do a search on the site for shock spring upgrade and then compare the pricing of which option works best for you.

@porter, The high prices of both a new and aftermarket replacement shock is what influenced my decission to go with a good condition 2nd hand Vee shock. This side of the pond, to have the Wee shock refurbished was not a viable option neither, due to the high cost.

I still have in my garage the original shock from my 2019 650 XT. It was replace by MCT with a Nitron in March this year as part of a suspension overhaul. It has done about 8,000 miles. PM me if anyone is interested.
