Centre stand
« on: September 23, 2024, 11:04:49 »
I note that the centre stand is missing off my new acquisition (650 2010 ) :) and I also see that that Ali Express sell centre stands very cheaply as opposed to European prices. However they list these as fitting second gen . Does anyone know if there is a difference in fitment/ stand or is the stand the same for all years ?

Hi luv2andy. I think you may be better asking your questions in the V-Strom Specific section, more people will read it. As for AliExpress, I have used them many times and they have been excellent except for one time and that was rectified.

Always what I have ordered has been exactly the same as I would have got elsewhere but much, much cheaper. The delivery can sometimes take a little longer but that's never been a problem to me. I'm not sure if the Gen1 and Gen2 stands are the same but if you ask in the correct forum page I'm sure someone will help you. I would order a  stand from AliExpress but make sure you order the correct one.

Reference fuel gauge, I bought my V-Strom quite a distance from home and rode it back in the dark and very heavy rain. A few miles from home the fuel gauge started to flash so the next morning I set out to fill up. I foolishly passed the nearest garage and went on hoping and expecting to reach Sainsbury's but ran out of fuel before I got there.

When the fuel gauge flashes fill up or at least put a little petrol in, don't be caught out as I was. Hope this helps.  :welcani:
Without rain, there would be no rainbows.

But it's for a gen 2/3, the OP wants one for a gen 1.
Maybe it'll fit, but .....

Yep , that looks like the one I got off flea bay for £90. It came with the wrong ,or defective, spring ( the tangs were out of line and wouldn't fit) and rattled due to loose weld floating about in the tubes and the feet were close together, so a bit wobbly.
Sent it back and got a std one, pricey, but it came with the all important extended hero blob, so you don't ( hopefully) get pitched off the bike when it decks BEFORE the cheap stand without one.
Plus it just kind of ..works ?

Ho Hum

And can someone with a decent parts number fiche /whatever please tell if the numbers are different between models as std and sort the fit question? Fowlers only go up to 2016  :GRR:

I'd be wary buying something like a centre stand from China, if the spring or spring mounting point failed it could all come to a bad end very quickly and the money saved by not buying the one from Cosmo for example could be a very false economy.

A quick search on stromtroopers found this,
https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/center-stand.441160/?post_id=5663431&nested_view=1&sortby=oldest#post-5663431

See post 21,
Seems gen 1 IS different
More than happy to be corrected though, I only have a gen3 , so....

So no-one knows then ? I mean at the cost of the Chinese product it's worth knowing if the gen 1 gen2 gen 3 fitments are the same ?https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005003973577262.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller.2.1471BApvBApvsm&gps-id=pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.40000.327270.0&scm_id=1007.40000.327270.0&scm-url=1007.40000.327270.0&pvid=76e6b9aa-8661-4e3c-beb0-8903d031c44f&_t=gps-id:pcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller,scm-url:1007.40000.327270.0,pvid:76e6b9aa-8661-4e3c-beb0-8903d031c44f,tpp_buckets:668%232846%238108%231977&pdp_npi=4%40dis%21GBP%2159.24%2139.69%21%21%2176.80%2151.46%21%40211b618e17271733584645675e14e1%2112000027609070296%21rec%21UK%21934425854%21X&utparam-url=scene%3ApcDetailTopMoreOtherSeller%7Cquery_from%3A

And Nigel S ... the Chinese are / become / : the Master race every 600 years. So don't worry unduly. Maybe in another life you'll sweat.

hi, luv2andy

That link didn't come through properly.
Going by my previous post it does look like gen1 IS different.
Maybe go on some more sites offering them ,SW motech/ cosmo and check them out to see if the offerings have a different listing to make sure. As I posted before , the savings are not always worth it if the fit /quality is not there.
Having had one in my hands, and price is the factor, I would go used original before one of those. But make sure to get the mounting kit , sometimes that gets left on the bike by an unknowing braker.

I have also duly thrown away my tin foil hat

Hi again Nigel S ... I went on Cosmo site ( ref. Rusty Nuts ) and asked them the pertinent q and they said :

"Hello,

our centrestand will fit all DL650 from 2004 to 2024."

So there's a listing on Ali Express ( I've used them for other products and they are direct from China as opposed from let's say Ebay where traders source their sales items anyway... )
and so far from them so good. Yes it takes longer to ship but there's a plethora of items that fit.... fyi cruise control for about £9 as opposed to 100$ ( and probably the same item ? )

As linked but that's not working (?)  there is a stand to be had for £39 ...   Shall I ?

Your call, but I would make sure you can send it back ( hopefully not to China out of your pocket ) if it turns out bad.
The way the different  stand makers fit the stand is different, the mounts for a std one e.g. are different to the one I sent back. Maybe that applies here with the cosmo
I would be worried by the cheap one ,if only due to the narrow spacing of the feet, it could easily go over causing expensive damage.

As Nigel says, it's going to be supporting your entire bike, what's your bike worth to you.
I know the cheap one might well be just as good but I wouldn't be able to trust it and peace of mind is priceless.
Cosmo stuff is seriously well made and they clearly reply to messages so would likely back up their warranty as well.
Your call, I would go with the more reputable item since the cost difference is not stratospheric in real money terms.

This is the linky from above hopefully working https://vi.aliexpress.com/item/1005003973577262.html
Personally I would go for Cosmo. My stand from them works very well, feels strong and generally inspires confidence.
This is how to fit it  :)

Being a cheap skate I'd be tempted to give that a go! The postage puts me of a bit though.
I only use my centre stand to park in my garage, out and about I just use the side stand.

I'm going to echo the safety issue if the springs or attachments were to come loose - you've got a floppy stand that will then touch the ground.

I'd be tempted to ask local bike breakers if they have any for sale and hopefully blag an OEM one that just needs a bit of clean up and paint.
