Best tyres - final thoughts
« on: September 27, 2023, 21:14:56 »
Hi blokes, I see so many posts praising so many different tyres. All I want to know is what is the most recommended tyre for purely touring use? Anybody got a definitive answer please!!!😀

I had Pilot Road 6 front and back. I was very pleased. When the rear was worn out I read about the Angel GT and how many miles it would do so I have one now. Still have the road 6 on the front until it too wares out but I'm going to change it for the matching Angel GT. So my answer is Angel GT.  :thumb:

Any sports touring tyre will do great, depends on how much you want to spend. They all have more grip than a Vstrom has ground clearance.
Michelin road 5-6 range are the best but the most expensive.  Pirelli angel gt's are good and reasonably priced, as are Bridgestone bt23's.
If I was using the bike every day I'd buy the Michelin's but if a weekend nice day rider I'd buy the gt's are the stones.

If you're talking about tarmac use only, then I'd go Michelin PRs. Tbf all the major manufacturers sport/touring tyres are excellent.

I only tour on tarmac and so far pretty much only in the UK.

I ride all year round in all weathers and I am now on my second set of Avon Spirit ST's.

I was recently told by a chap from Dunlop (they make Avon) on the stand at the Overlander Event that Dunlop Mutant's would give me more grip but less miles, but I am more than happy with the levels of grip and handling with the ST's and don't have to consider my options for a couple more years.
The older I get, the better I was.

I agree that pretty much any main brand tyre will out perform the V-Strom for road riding. I've used mainly Michelin PRs on mine but I also liked the Dunlop Roadsmart 3s which I got 19,000 miles thought they stood upright on their own when removed  lol
Price made me go back to the Michelin 5s, but I can't say I notice any difference in grip in the wet/dry when moving between brands.

My DL1000 came with Metzeler Roadtec 01 fitted and for grip and handling I can't fault them, wet or dry. No idea about durability yet.

I see Ride rate these as the top sport tourer tyre but never hear them being discussed on here.

Pirelli Scorpion Trail 2s on mine - great all purpose tyre for the V Strom, smooth but good grip on the road. Will cope with a bit of gravel too.

I tried the BT23’s but couldn’t get on with them. Now I have the Michelin RP6 and they have been great.

You cannot go past the Metzeler Roadtec01, especially the SE version.

What it shows is there are no really bad tyres, most are excellent and better than the bike your going to fit them to. So buy the ones you can get a good deal on and don't worry if you don't like them 100% they'll soon wear out!
