Bearing seals
« on: September 17, 2023, 07:42:22 »
I am going to change my wheel bearings and I presume the original ones were single sided seals.

Going to replace with 2RS bearings so sealed both sides.

Now the Sunday Stupid Question ::::::::

If I use sealed both side bearings (2RS), do I still need to use the additional seals listed in the schematics.

Just can’t get me head around this one. I don’t think so but thought it would be worth a check before I order up the stuff.

Cheers

Ian

If you mean the big rubber seals on the outer face then yes you do, these seal against the spindle and stop the worst of the muck getting into the bearing recess.
The single sided Suzuki ones still have a seal on the outside, they just ditch the inner seal on the assumption that the flange on the bearing recess is covering the inner face anyway. To be honest, the main reason to switch to 2RS is cost rather than vastly improved sealing I think.

OK
Purchase quality bearings with the suffix 2RS  (NTN,SKF,NSK,Koyo etc)
Remove one seal from the bearing. Pickup new seals as well.
(There are numbers on the bearings and seals and they are usually less $$
 at a bearing shop)
Completely clean the wheel , axle etc .
Pack wheel , bearings with new high quality grease.Assemble
Hope this helps!
note: bearinsg with one seal run cooler and add less friction the 2RS bearings.
Personally , I use Bearings with one Z (less friction again) . ex 6204 Z
The outside seals are the most important to keeping dirt out.
hope this helps

I just used the two sided seal bearings as they came. OEM seals needed replacing at c. 18,000 miles as they were gone after three winters of commuting. Double-sided sealed bearings were replaced at c. 57,000 miles.

I would use double sealed bearings everytime, I don't care about increased friction!  My rear wheel bearings give up at 20k miles because Suzuki saved 50p by only using one seal. The replacement bearings are in 25k miles now and are good as new.

Wow
You UK blokes ride in the winter !
Here we have a short season... late April till Late October!
After that the  only riding we do is on the snowblower  :)
PS if you use the 2 seals in the bearing , look for the Koyo 2RD
the RD  lower friction  , but offering the seal of the RS.
