petrol consumption on a new bike
« on: August 13, 2023, 18:55:25 »
Hi all. I have a brand new 1050 and in the few miles I've done since I've had it (it's been raining...) the consumption has been horrific: 11km per litre (about 25 m:g) round town. I'm pretty damn sure I should be getting around 40, what's the general opinion? Otherwise, it's a pretty good bike, love the handling (last bike was a 22 year old CB1300) and the switch gear. What's the general opinion? Ta.

My old gen1 does;
38 when abused through the mountains.
43 almost all the time under normal use.
50+ on a long run of motorway or A roads.

Others with 1050s will comment I'm sure but 25mpg is definitely not right unless you've left it idling over night between rides 🤔

I thought all the newer models had better economy than the older versions.

25mpg cannot be right.

reset it and see what it's like, if you've not done anything to it I'd suggest the dealer has had it idling for 10-15 minutes while going through checks, that'll drag the fuel consumption down.

While you're at it, change it to mpg from km/L

@Rixington 43

Can you please tell me how you've managed that . I have the same bike and only average around 41mpg anything I could do to improve it would be great.

I don't think I've done anything special other than regular servicing (throttle bodies, plugs etc). It drank like a fish when I got it but I found the rear down pipe joint was blowing by and that may have been affecting the lambda sensor. I don't run any high draw electrics like heated clothing and I never run pillion but I'm 15st geared up so no MotoGP whippet. I do run the stock gearing now (17/41), it was a touch thirstier when it was a tooth up at the rear.

That's interesting as I suspect I my have a leak in my exhaust, I'm still running an original system. But considering changing to an aftermarket one. I also have standard sprockets , but weigh considerably more than you which I know drags my figures down. And as my fat keeps me warm I've no heated gear either. At least fuel prices have come down a bit. :thumb:

Mark,
Reset the mpg and go for a ride out of town. The new engine will take a while to bed in and some proper loosening up miles will help.
Your mpg does sound horrendous but it may just be newness and usage.

Hi Mark
I sold my 1050 xt a few weeks back having covered 4550 miles in a couple of years and always got between 55 and 61 to the UK gallon.
Have you been idling your new baby at stand still and listening to that fab engine noise because the weathers is so crap, that would account for the poor MPG!!.
Enjoy your new bike.

If you haven’t done enough miles the clever computer won’t have had a chance to do its sum’s properly.

On my Honda, if I reset the average MPG, it didn’t get up to its usual MPG for a good few miles……that’s why I stopped resetting and just left it alone.

How many miles have you done? Wait until after your first good run, then you’ll know if you’ve got a problem.👍

1 gen 1000 here, about 40mpg when abusing it :) 25mpg on 1050 is not right for sure.

That depends on how you drive it (and if E10, E5 or E0).

My 1050 goes from 5 km/l to 30 km/l

11km per litre = 31.07mpg, but that still seems not right/too low.
Having said that, if it is all around town/stop start then it may be right.

11km per litre is 50mpg
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

I'm reckoning 11km/l to be almost 31 mpg.
