just won't start..... HELP!
« on: April 13, 2023, 12:22:45 »
OK here we go........

background - bike has basically been in my shed since COVID hit and I stopped commuting
to work. got int out last summer for its MoT rode it upland down motorway to test station (passed) then back in the shade as I was working away all the time.

Fast forward to now and I have stopped work so don't need bike anymore and so thought spruce it up and sell it.

Won't start, it has a new battery. and is fully charged and bike turns over fine, all clocks work and no error messages. It has a new fuel pump as the old one seized at some stage and so has good fuel flow out of tank, (seen at out let pipe where it joins flexible section under tank.
I can hear the pump priming.

had rear spark plug out and can see spark but the plug is dry.

So I am thinking the injectors are firing (??) - if so how do I check??

its a 2007, 650 - 60k miles.

where do I go now or any one want to buy a project...........

sorry to be no help, but a word of advice, unless you absolutely know about injectors ,leave that part of bike  to a pro, they can inject fuel at very high pressures , like into your arm /face,caution very much advised ,good luck

While you're turning it over, spray some easy start into the airbox funnel , if it is definitely sparking it should fire and may kick-start everything else.

Out of interest,  how long has it been unused..?

Just a thought...that fuel must have been sat in your tank a very long time - 2 years or more? Maybe try draining the tank and putting a bit of fresh petrol in it? Also, try starting it with the throttle wide open a couple of times.

if your plugs are completely dry then there is no fuel getting through. if the injectors are working then the plugs would be wet. before you spend loads on it try putting injector cleaner in with the fuel

Kwackboy's advice is good. I once got a Harley up and running again after it was filled with diesel using easy-start. Remove the tank, drained and cleaned out, fresh fuel, crank her over and spray the easy start near the airbox intake, keep going till it'll run on it's own.  OK this was on a tractor Harley D but I'm sure it'll work on a Vstrom too.

Many thanks to all that respond and apologies for not updating but I have been away.

Well I have tried everything suggested, new fuel, smoking inlets and end of injectors in cleaners but to no avail. It will start and run if you spray enough easy start but not keep going.
So I don't have the time or patience any more and am clean out of ideas so its on Ebay for spares or repair - someone cleverer that me will get a good bike

Have you checked the fuel pump, Is it priming..?

You're not getting fuel somehow.
