Wind buffeting
« on: October 12, 2008, 23:19:23 »
Today I took my first ever test ride of the strom 1000. from my local dealers.

Jumped on,and thought...Hmm not as cumfy as I expected,however,off I set...

Nice low down punch of the v twin engine...all good,nice slick box,excellent,sitting position.....passed sports biks going in the other direction and thought  lol this is the way forward lads  ;)

Out I go onto the open raod,get some pace up...and then..... :shock:  hit 80 plus mph and I think I have blurred vision coming on  :shock: then a migrane...wtf...it's the wind buffeting  :shock:

I intended on taking this bike out for at leats two hours ( didn't tell them that ;) ) but within half an hour I was back at the shop...

The worst wind buffeting I have ever expierenced on a bike in all my biking years....have to say blokes it's kind of put me right off buying of of these bikes  :-|

Hi, There now appear to be four ways to go with this:
1. Live with it;
2, Replace the standard screen with an aftermarket item such as the MRA Vario and or the MADSTAD bracket;
3, Replace said standard screen with the smaller smoked item from the 650X
4, Remove the screen altogether, although this probably isn't the prettiest way to go.

It appears that many sports bike riders change their screens too so it isn't just the Strom / KLV that has this problem.

Mike, you're spot on and I've done them all .......

1. Live with it;
Then you're going to travel at a very sedate pace or get a migriane
Quote from: "Piglumps"
2, Replace the standard screen with an aftermarket item such as the MRA Vario and or the MADSTAD bracket
Somewhere near a hundred variations of screen and bracket combinations and none are 100% guaranteed but can work out expensive, so far I've bought one bracket and 3 different screens to the tune of £200+
Quote from: "Piglumps"
3, Replace said standard screen with the smaller smoked item from the 650X
IT does pretty the bike but has a higher frequency buffering effect .... for me AND was £72
Quote from: "Piglumps"
4, Remove the screen altogether, although this probably isn't the prettiest way to go.
Works extremely well and keeps you under 90 on the clock, you can hit 130 on the overtakes past a blade but it's not sustainable.
Not pretty but hands up who thinks the Strom is not the result of inbreeding, not even a mother could love that bike on looks alone.

It's possibly the most discussed subject on Stromtroopers.com and everyone has found a solution, and no one can agree to a 100% cure and ride with the visor open ... except buying a goldwing. And if the Vee wasn't such a fun bike I would have binned it within a month of buying it but I adore it, and will live without the screen on one of the ugliest bikes ever made, not as bad as the Varadero or the 1150GS though, now they are ugly!!
Grrrr:-)

I couldn't believe how much better the bike (650) is without the screen -can I have a refund Mr Suzuki!

Glad to hear about the sports screen -won't buy one of those.

I'm thinking about a big screen for winter, but I might not bother, I'm still going to get wet when it rains.

Well I think it's better and as far as the weather, Hein Gericke come in very handy with a waterproof leather jacket called the Oxan II and whilst not cheap at £220 it's worth every penny and it does precisely what it says on the tin. True all weather jacket with the added peace of mind of wearing leather not textile. And NO bloody one piece plastic suit to struggle into on the side of the road aaaagggghhhhh!!!!!

But as with all things "Get what you pay for" :)))
Grrrr:-)

The answer to this problem is a Zeus 2100B dual sport helmet.  It works - the wind just passes smoothly over you.  I go back to my Shoei and the buffeting starts again.

As it happens some kind soul recently stole my Zeus - so I'll be buying another one.

I have an 08 DL1000GT. No matter what I try I cannot get wind buffetting!
Is there something wrong with my Strom?
I've ridden 100 miles non-stop without going below 90mph - not a single buffet, not even a wee one!
Should I demand my money back from Mr Suzuki? I'm feeling very left out.

yes you should. its not fair that you've missed out on the experience.

 :sarc:  :sarc:  :sarc:

I don't have it on mine, now that I put the MRA vario large screen on.

One day, someone showed me a glass of water that was half full.  And he said, "Is it half full or half empty?"  So I drank the water.  No more problem.

I had a mind blowing experience with wind turbulance when I first rode my Vee and for a split second wondered if I had done the right thing buying the bike. I considered buying another screen but before I did I tried a solution posted by 'cearnshaw 2nd October 2009' which involved plastic washers. I'm 6' and found this solution to be a god send no more buffeting (well, very much reduced) saved a lot of money.
