Screens......
« on: January 25, 2023, 16:14:29 »

I know, I know, but what else are you going to chat about in January in good old blighty. Screens, all things to all people and seldom as good as we'd like.
At present I have a Loster that sits at about 41 cm high from the top of the headlight, this on the latest series 650. This was fitted by a previous owner.
My seat is currently being raised by about 2 inches above std seat height.
The Loster was already a little short and the wind was a little troublesome, isn't it always......with the added seat height the wind is going to hit me smack in the kisshole.....probably.
I could buy a loster flip over jobbie but should I. I do like two piece screens and I'm a big fan of MRA, but they seem a little short.
The Givi two piece looks about the right height but may be a little thin.......I wished I was........, so what do you all think of your screens? I'd love to know.
Thanks for your previous input on tank bags and panniers. These will be on soon and I'll post a piccie once on, probably when I get the seat back.
Thanks.
Upt'North.

The previous owner of my 2015 650 fitted a Givi airflow. I'm just a little over 6'1" and using the standard seat I find I can run the outer screen quite low and still get almost complete deflection of air. I ride 90% of the time with the visor on my helmet open as I simply do not need to close it, at least not to keep the breeze off my face.... I do still get the occasional fly in the eye,  but I often have sunglasses on.

I think the Givi is more than robust enough to be run with the outer screen at almost full extension without it bending or deflecting too much. I originally ran it quite high and never noticed an undue movement.

My VStrom is the first bike I have ever had with a screen so I can't compare the Givi to anything else, but I am impressed with mine, it works extremely well.
The older I get, the better I was.

I tried a Givi airflow two piece screen on recommendation for my 2021 650 and couldn't stop my helmet being buffeted and shook over 60mph, it was fine slower,  for over a month I tried it in every position and shimmed it everyway on the frame to no avail, worst screen I've ever had and the outer screen is soft and scratches very easily.  In the end I bought a Puig, shimmed the bottom out around 5mm and it is absolutely perfect for me, I can see over it on to the road around 25ft in front, It gives quiet, calm. air, and can ride with my visor up at any speed,    I am 6'-4",, what suits one doesn't suit another,

Thanks Boys, and yes that proves the point completely.
But your comments are useful so please keep them coming. I would like to get it right first time.
I've just been reading about the Madstad and thought that sounds good, but again size is variable. Then I saw the price, £300.00 blummin pound for a screen.
Again for the record I am a realist and after hundreds of thousands of miles and 45 years + of riding I'm not expecting to find perfection.

I had a givi airflow on my 2018 650, it was really good 80mph no buffeting in fact it was too good during the last year's heatwave so I've put the std screen back on. For reference I'm 6'1" and have the oem tall saddle fitted.

Givi for me too. I've got to say though, Suzuki did a great job with the OEM screen but we are all different heights and a Givi can be fine tuned a little better. As I've said before on another thread, ride in the rain and you get a visible display as to how the screen is performing by watching the raindrops blow off the screen.
Without rain, there would be no rainbows.

Givi for me too, motorway speeds with my visor up. Just don't set the top screen too high as it doesn't seem to have the expected result of pushing the air higher, I think it needs to to have a certain amount of forced air between the screens to work properly.

I have a puig flip on the standard 2017 650 screen .works fine, I am 6' with standard seat. I had a givi aerflo on my previous gs 1200. it was just OK but acted like a sail in cross winds. I dropped that bike in a sloping car park and broke the lower part so went back to the original screen. around the same time I changed my helmet to a better fitting one and that made the biggest difference of all. I still have the upper part of the givi +the brackets.

Yes pb. You know you've got it right when you come to clean all those insects out between the screens and fairing.

(How are things with you? We still see ex-Tourdregs DarlingBeryl, Nodrog and Simon.)
So how's it going so far then?

+ 1 for Givi.
As PB says, the more the screens overlap the better the Givi works. Apparently it works on the Venturi effect, reducing the pressure between the screens & thus speeding up the airflow. That air then fills the void/vacuum behind the screen which in turn stops the rush of air from the sides trying to get into that vacuum...........I think!
Mines set, almost, as low as possible & works fine at all speeds.

I have several and use different ones depending on the time of year. I use the Givi D260ST tall touring screen during the colder weather as it keeps everything off you. When it gets warmer I switch to an MRA X-Creen-Touring (XCT) which is a tinted sport screen with a spoiler. That works brilliantly with no buffering at all, plus it’s lower so I can see over the top whereas the Givi touring screen you look through.

I'm 5'10", 29" leg, leaving the 41" above the seat.
I'm looking over the screen (quite easily) at that & get a bit of clean air on the helmet.
I don't know how anyone can look through a screen especially when raining or on 'dirty' roads. That's why they have to put wipers & wash bottles on cars?

Some of us are vertically challenged and have no choice but to look through the screen  lol

I'm 5'8" so the Givi touring screen is high so I end up looking through it. This is why I bought the MRA screen, as I prefer to look over the screen rather than through it. Hence why I change screens during the year, full protection from the elements in colder wet weather is handy and then when the sun pops out, so does my head!

+1 for the MRA X-creen. Had 2, very adjustable, very effective.
