Panniers.
« on: January 09, 2023, 12:56:15 »
Any info would be very welcome.
I'm thinking of fitting Shad SH35 panniers on my 650. I'm thinking 35's because they are a little narrower than the 36's and I also think the aluminum colouring will fit in nicely with the 58 litre Ali TopCase.
I'm thinking the rounded design will be kinder to the pillion (we are not getting any younger) for getting on and off and maybe a little more leg room when on the move.
Do any of you have these fitted, got any piccies, width when on, use the Shad inner bags, use the 3P attachments etc?
Thanks in advance.

Could anyone confirm if their inner bags just zip up the middle. If so that's dumb

I can't comment on the Shad but this is our setup. They are Givi Trekker, n/s is a 46l & the o/s is a 33l. The reason for the different size is that it evens the width out with the high exhaust. (I don't think you will have that problem on the L7?)
They measure a couple of centimetres wider than the bars/mirrors. I wouldn't want to try & filter in a town or city with them on but I find filtering through slow moving traffic on dual carriageways & motorways is OK, so long as you take your time. (We avoid towns & cities when touring anyway)
I just bought some small, cheap bags of eBay that fit fine.
Getting on & off with any pannier fitted will still be awkward & a bit of a technique. I have to lift my leg up & push through the seat rather than 'cock' it over as I do without. I fitted a rack onto the backbox which Deb uses as a purchase, along with my shoulder, to step up onto the rear peg & push her trailing leg through between me & the back box.
The second photo shows the clearance for the foot on the rear peg & the height of the box to clear the passengers thigh. This setup doesn't interfere with any leg room the passenger requires.(we tried a new 1050 complete with OEM boxes for size some time back & found that because they sit so high on the bike they are most uncomfortable for the passenger, pushing against the thigh)
Personally if I was to buy again I think I would go for the top loading type, I'm sure they are easier to load & unload?

I have had a collection of cases on my 650 including Shad. Well made, if a little wide due to exhaust, the mounting system is as good as OEM. This is understandable as Shad make for the likes of BMW. I now use the Givi Dolomiti top loading aluminium cases. They offer 33l each side so will not take a lid, but we have a V47 topcase which holds 2.

I actually have a set of SH23 and SH58x as top box. They were sitting on my 650 and I transferred then to the 1050. I remember them as a better fit on the 650.

I would say that the more narrow the better.

Shad 35's ordered.
£304 a pair! Plus fitting kit of course.
I was probably expecting to pay double that.

I had the 3p on my Veek, alone with the 36's and they are all good. If you look at any of my previous posts you'll see pictures.

Thanks Caffs, I didn't know I could, but I just have.
They looked good too.
I've settled on 35's mainly because of the 60 mm total less width and only 2 litres less storage.
Who needs spare skiddies anyway?
OUCH!  :violence-smack: . Er'Indoors heard me.

They're on.
Very pleased with the fit, the Givi top box complicated the fitting because they share a fixing. The fitting also requires you drilling plastic out to 16mm, just saying to prepare others who may fit them. I drilled to half an inch then carefully used a small round file until the spacers were a snug fit.
I think they compliment the top box too.
They add about 1 inch on either side to the total width.

Your attention to detail has paid off, only 1 inch wider, they obviously work for you and they look good too.
Personally, I only put the panniers on when I'm going to use them. I keep the top box all of the time because it saves carrying my lid and keeps it safe.

Enjoy your bike, it looks well sorted and my second favourite colour, mine is white.  :thumb:
