Engine swap , brains please
« on: November 16, 2022, 15:45:30 »
Afternoon

After some bad news I need some thoughts .

I did a trip from Cornwall to Isle of Skye via Wales , Lake District , I headed from Peterborough to Cornwall and all was well , we met the next morning for start and after 40 miles ish my bike started to rattle , it started to get worse so at a coffee stop I check the oil and there wasn’t any , when I left I did check and it was on the min but thought I’d grab some on route .
Headed to the garage and put 2.2 Ltrs in …….ohhhh
I decided just to head home thinking I’d be closer if it gave up but she got me home , I grabbed my friends storm and headed to Wales .
I took my bike to BSD eye Peterborough and they have said it’s dead , at best top end and worse bottom end and wouldn’t be worth doing .

It’s a 2009 650 and really good condition , new tyres , grips and £1400 in shock and front end rebuild .
So
Can I put a later engine in without to many issues , wait for a engine of the same year , buy another and swap the good bits over to the new bike , buy a bike and put the engine in mine .
Possibly buy a newer bike and swap my bikes over , front and back suspension etc , would they fit ?

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated

Thank you

Chris

I think I'd do this.
Buy a good condition, acceptable mileage same model 650. I would think around £2500 over the winter months. Strip yours and keep everything good for spares.
Swap the bits at your leisure over the winter and ride come spring.
Post a wanted on here too, you never know.
Check the oil.

Breakers yard for an engine. Same or similar year.

Your best cost effective solution to this problem is to swap the motor.

Your model DL650, I believe,  ran up to 2011.

Try to find a late , same model, low mileage motor.

2007-2011 year model bikes will work for you.
Before 2007 model has only has 2 plugs and some of the connectors won't line up.
The later model was a much more evolved engine and think its safe to say also won't work.

Be careful for cross over models. - I had a K6 on a 2007 plate and the L2 2012 year model was released towards the end of 2011 and people often refer to them as 2011 year models but the Glees sold in 2011 were all 2012 year models.

If you find an engine for sale, post a picture here before paying for it! It's fairly easy to spot when you know what you're looking for.

There's a 650 (2011 - 60 plate) on the facebook group (Suzuki Vstrom Owners UK) 66000 miles for £600!!
No pictures but if you're on there you can go on his page & see some.

Taa for the reply’s , I think another bike and swap the engine looks the best option .

I’d be interested in the Facebook bike but I don’t do Facebook , if you had a link I’d ask my girlfriend to nose , I’m so old sometimes .

Cheers

Well that's me out, I was going to offer a 2006 model with 22k on the clock

The 2009 bike should be a K9 CHECK THE V5
A 2010 bike should be an L0.
They look identicle
However the Frames are not the same. Engine bars for the K9 do not fit the L0
Do not be misdirected by looking at registration plate years but always check the model number in the V5.

This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

The bike on Facebook is a 2011 so I don't think the engine will fit your 2009.

Thank you for the info .

I have contacted him about buying it so maybe I should leave it as it could be a waste of effort as he’s a 4 hour drive away .

What years does the k9 cover in terms of reg plates , could be a long search .

If I bought a new storm , new shape from mine would my forks , shock etc fit in the later models

Thinking maybe just buy a complete bike

Thank you

Sorry , I’m thinking

If I bought the 2011 bike would all my parts fit , shock , front forks , wheels , fairings .

Essentially swooping all my best bits over to make the new bike as good as it could be from my bits

Does that make sense , I’m lost as to what to do .
