Whining noise, ignition on engine off.
« on: November 12, 2022, 18:11:14 »
Just taken ownership of a brand new 1050XT Tour, not yet ridden it but fitted an optimate connector and then switched the ignition on and noticed a whining noise (possibly fuel pump).
Previous bikes I have had initially whine, then stop after a short while. I started the engine, ran it for 30 seconds or so, hit the kill switch, but the whining is still there.
I'm assuming it is the fuel pump, but it could be anything. Do I have a problem, or is this normal?
I didn't notice when the bike was delivered, but it had been running a while before the engine was switched off, and I was shown over the bike with the ignition switched on.
Any advice if this is normal or not appreciated.

Don't know about the 1050, but my KTM does the same thing. Assuming it's the injection system getting fuel pressure up, then regulating or recirculating it? Those who actually know stuff will be along presently.

Thanks I was thinking similar, but concerned how long it actually goes on for.
I shall go out for a long ride tomorrow and see if it stops when its been running a while.

Sounds like the fuel pump ....

Listen with an ear pressed on the tank , you'll feel and hear the pump when you turn on the ignition.

Personally I've yet to come across a 1050 but generally fuel pumps operate for a few seconds before start up to build up fuel pressure.

On all my previous bikes the pumps have run for a few seconds after turning the ignition on. This is continuously running, and even after running the engine briefly and killing it, it is still running.
I did read elsewhere that the system takes ages to build up pressure.
I'll see how it is after a bit of a ride, and if it's still doing it, I'll get in touch with the dealership.

Possibly a blocked fuel filter that stops the pump reaching the required pressure so it just keeps running ?
