Battery negative lead to ground.
« on: October 16, 2022, 17:49:04 »
Hello, before I go ripping panels off could anybody please tell me where the negative battery lead on a 2004 K series 650 V Strom is earthed to the frame.

I am getting an intermittent starting problem whereby when I turn the key, the hands on the speedo and rev counter do their their thing but all lights go out and nothing happens when I press the starter. If I move the bike a couple of feet, in neutral, and try again she fires up as normal. I am suspecting a loose battery earth because the clock stops too. I may be completely wide of the mark!

Many thanks,

Dicky.

Have a look at the pix wrt the location of the 1st gen Wee earthing point on the under side of the engine casing, in reply #10 of https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=37637.msg380544#msg380544

To quote the late greywolf "Any secondary earth connection needs to go to the engine case. Attaching it to the frame will encourage bimetallic galvanic corrosion of the bolts connecting the steel parts of the frame to the aluminium main frame and engine. That is the same effect that caused the steel bolt to aluminium engine connection to corrode. Rather than using a secondary earth, the use of a cadmium plated bolt and applying a corrosion preventative material like ACF50 grease would be a better solution."
