Not had it myself... but this may help with the location of the sensor...

Perhaps the parts list drawing can help explain the location of the sensor. See item #36 in https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5924843/DL1000-abs-v-strom/gear-shifting

On this drawing of parts... https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5924843/DL1000-abs-v-strom/gear-shifting ... it looks like it's item No 36, which looks to me as if its on the RH side of gearbox/bike.

Here's the same diagram from another  site... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/402054199937?hash=item5d9c4c3a81:g:1n8AAOSwvAReLtxA

More info from another forum... https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/gear-position-sensor-replacement.430546/

Sounds like its an internal job?

Or maybe not when you look at the 8th picture down on this advert... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/203109272219?hash=item2f4a418a9b:g:lroAAOSwjJliDJCQ

Mine is doing the same - would be good to know what you find out when investigating
