Tall Rider
« on: July 03, 2022, 20:40:53 »
Hello!

Just getting back into motorbikes. Last time I road was back in the late 70s when I could ride a 250 on L plates.  Not so keen to start on anything too grunty, so looking around the 600 - 800cc mark.  Done a lot of research and the 650 V Strom looks like a good affordable option on paper, however, I am 6'2" and 120kg and was wondering if I would be too big. Trouble is, where I live in Devon, there are none locally to try out, so before I go off an a 2 - 3 hour trek to see one, I was hoping for some feedback as to whether people think I would fit. My budget can stretch to the Mk 3 version.

Thanks.

get a footpeg lowering kit from Cymarc and you will be good to go. maybe bar risers as well.

Hi MAW, I'm 6'3" & 100Kg. I went for the DL1000, fitted the footpeg lowering kit from Cymarc and the fit is perfect.  :)

I saw a couple of Youtube vids that compared the 1000 with the 650. The consensus seemed to be the 1000/1050 is a nice ride, but more suited to making miles on a motorways with the 650 more suited to twisties. Most of my riding will be around the Devon countryside, so was concerned a big engine would be overkill, but also a coupe of youtubers said the throttle on 1000 was a overly sensitive and could easily get your into trouble. That said, I did sit on a 1000 and it was a good fit.

I avoid all motorways and major A-roads, at all times possible. For me, the 1000 is great on the back roads and twisties.

There are a lot of V-Strom riders well over 6 foot tall and a number of us at 6'6" and above. I think most of the taller blokes do have 650's rather than 1000's.

You won't have a problem. The footpeg kit, bar risers and higher seat options will all help if you feel a bit tight.

This is more of a question than a statement. Is the frame size of the 650 identical to the 1000, but with a lower seat? I remember sitting on both before buying, and they appeared to be the same.

The 650 is a good option for bigger riders, it's physically quite big, in fact bigger, more roomy than my FJR. As said above there are footrest lowering and bar rising options if required.

I'm 6'2" with a 34" leg, and have a 2018 1000. Haven't got the pegs lowered but do have a high seat (885mm I believe), and I find it very roomy and comfortable on long rides, and very enjoyable on the twisties, especially since I put Metzeler Roadtec 01 tyres on. In fact I find it more comfortable than the 2016 650 I had.

With the high seat the ergos are just right for me - the bike never feels like it's going to tip to one side no matter what (finally a +I've for long legs).

I'm 6'2" and 95kg with 33" inside leg.  I have the 650 Strom, my second strom, and came back to it for a couple of reasons but the main reason was its comfy seating position.  Mine is not modified at all.......

6'2" and 90kg plus change.
I've got the 1000 but the 650 is physically very similar, certainly in the first Gen.
Mine has bar risers and mirror extenders as well as a mesh seat cover for a bit of extra height. Not gone the peg lowering route as I don't want to lose the cornering clearance but I find it comfortable for hours on end as long as I ride stood up for a bit through towns.

I am 6' and found I needed the taller seat unit (for the 1K Gen2), standard seat is far too 'cupped' and deep; just bought a good as new tall seat from the 'bay. Well pleased as my knees were aching when I got back from a short tour in France a couple of weeks ago; better riding position and 'look' of the bike too.
