I have noted that the side stand has a issue of the arm being very loose on the the frame support plus a sideways movement.
Have anybody elses seen this issue before but it may be worth checking the pin bolt is screwed in from the oposite side and a captive nut holds it in place.. The bolt has a smooth section for the hinge to work but the fork section is loose and slides on the frame hole.

I'm wondering about removing the stand leg and frame section to see if the mounting hole has become enlarged and allowing the sidestand to become floppy.

I know the stand is poor and easly can cause a drop when getting off the machine as the slightest move forward it folds in.

My side stand moves in the bracket & will move an inch or two on the ground when it takes the weight of the bike. I don't think it's got any worse over the years though. I've only ever had the arm off once a few years ago to grease the pin so not sure of any wear, might have a look one day.  :thumb:
It's been mentioned on here before & after a quick search I found this............

there's probably more on the forum somewhere.

My 7 year old DL650 and my 35 year old GPX both do the same.

One thing that has been mentioned recently was loading or even mounting the bike on side stand. The conclusion was that it's a practice to be avoided as it would over load or stress the pin and/or leg.

Like you say NEVER park the bike on side stand facing down hill.
So how's it going so far then?

I found on mine that the issue was more down to the slack between the stand and the bracket than the pivot bolt itself so I just removed the stand and made up a thin shim out of stainless plate, reduced the play a fair bit. I also have a side stand foot which adds a bit of overall length to the stand and makes the bike sit a touch more upright when parked. I do mount and dismount with the bike on the stand but I do it via the offside peg with the 'legover' method.

* If you do have to park facing downhill in an emergency like I had to recently then just pop the bike in first gear and roll forward until the engine locks up the rear wheel, not going anywhere then, sidestand or otherwise ;)

Nor up hill!! Not long after I had the bike I parked it on an uphill slope (not in gear) in a car park as I walked away I heard a scraping sound, I turned around to see the bike rolling backwards & turning at the same time. For an old fat man I was surprised how fast I could move, the bike was vertical when I got to it. It may or may not have toppled over but since then I always leave it in gear, facing up or down.

I have a video of an Australian ploice woman that parked her hire bike Motorguzi only find ir ran away as the side stand said no more... don't they have hills in Auz??

Back to the subject in hand.. I stripped the side stand down stripping off the side pegs, ignition kickstand switch and the side stand essembly comes of easily 2 bolts.
Icould see that the main bolt has little small flange and the outer section of the arm which is thinner than the other side this can open making the gap increase and the arm floppy.
Looking at the options I fitted a large washer to cover the gap seen on the thin side of the arm section to stop it opening up and with a larger bodied nut. This tightened up the arm and the slack that was seen before.

It seems that with the bolt, arm and frame becoming worn this showes up the small amount showed up as much greater on the end of the stand...

Its so stiff now I think Viagra has been used.. lol

Thanks ofr the replies... Min G0JMS
