Scotland for a few days.
« on: April 29, 2022, 20:41:28 »
Gents, we are heading to Scotland for a few days for the last week in May.
We will be staying in a caravan in Tummel Bridge, west of Pitlochry and will have three full days there. A few years ago we 'did' part of the west coast, very enjoyable, but this time would like to find a few nice roads on the east side, around the Cairngorms, to ride for a couple of days, we will go west to Glencoe, Fort William, Spean Bridge, maybe Applecross on one of our days.
As well as some nice routes we would like some recommendations of places to stop for a bite to eat (a 'Full Scottish' would be most welcome  :icon_wink:). We do intend to go to Arbroath to have a taste of the Smokies but anything else would be great.
Mileage wise 150 - 200 miles a day  would be about right with photo & food/coffee stops.
Any local knowledge would be most welcome.  :thumb:
PS no off road/dirt tracks please, B roads/single track would be OK.
Thank you.

Take a run up to Aberlour in Speyside, loads of beautiful roads and places to eat, you will be spoilt for choice.
Get there like this https://goo.gl/maps/bumcRryzStDZvPEb9
Then return via the A95 / A9 But if you look at the map you'll see that you can minimise your time on these roads and travel on wonderful roads just parallel to them or if you are pushed for time hop on to the main roads, but observe speed limits!
Have fun,

In some parts the "A" roads are single track with passing places.

Some suggestions, the "Wee mad road" and then continue north from Lochninver: https://www.dangerousroads.org/europe/Scotland/6414-badnagyle-rhegreanoch.html

Banchory - Cock Bridge - The Lecht - Tomintoul - Granton-On-Spey - Ferness then a u-turn and down to Dunlain Bridge on the B9007.
Tomintoul to Duftown
East side of Loch Ness from Fort Augustus - Suidhe viewpoint - Farr House then a very quiet road over to Corrievorrie

Some ideas here: https://livefastdieold.scot/motorcycle-routes-in-Scotland/

And you need to get this book: https://www.tarmap.co.uk/shop/q91pevv2h93sc35si7m3taoeqkwytb   -  The Motorcyclist's Guide to Scotland

I take it you'll be coming up the A1?
There's a nice caff at Grantshouse just over the border and just off the A1, it's well signed. If you miss the first turn there's another in half a mile.
I can't remember the road number but it's the one that passes the ski resorts, fabulous road.
The Moray coast is also glorious with some lovely small fishing villages. The roads to Applecross, if you don't already know, can be extremely slow going. So allow plenty of time.
If you want details of places on the Moray coast I'll try to awaken some brain cells.......or maybe look at a map.
Enjoy.

Just remembered another cafe.
The Highlanders Bakehouse, Crathie. Truly amazing.

Upt North, we're coming up via the M6 as staying a night in Carlisle, then M74/M80 & onwards.

Thanks for the info so far, any more always welcome.  :thumb:

Depending where abouts you are staying in Carlisle and if you fancy a nice curry the Shaha Tandoori is well worth a visit. It's just around the corner from the Ibis on Botchergate. I have had many a cracking curry from there. It's worth noting that Botchergate gets a 'bit boisterous' on a weekend too...

2112, we're staying at the Premier Inn, not far from Jct 43 M6. So not too far away but....
although I do enjoy a curry I tend to stay away from them the night before I'll be out on the bike all day, next day!!

In that case consider using the A7 to cross over towards Edinburgh, a truly magnificent road, probably the best A road in the Borders.
It's relatively quick too so won't add too much time on your riding day.
I'll try and come up with some Moray coastal delights.
Ethel where's me map.

If you end up on the Moray coast, check out the Buckie coast road, Portsoy for the town and probably the best ice cream in the world, Gardenstown and a real must, Crovie.
From memory they aren't the best biking roads but the scenery is so stunning you won't get out of second gear anyway.
Plus if you've come up the A93, A939 you'll be ready for a rest.

2112, we're staying at the Premier Inn, not far from Jct 43 M6.

The foods not bad there to be honest at the adjacent Border Gate beefeater, I was in earlier this year with my mate and we had some very welcome soup on a somewhat bracing day.

Upt North, now you've got my attention!!!!
"Portsoy for the town and probably the best ice cream in the world".  :icon_drool5:
Is it just the one place that sells it or anywhere?  :icon_wink:
We like scenery so we'll check that part out.
Cheers.  :thumb:

The Ice Cream place we stopped at was on the main road through the town of Portsoy. You can't miss it people queue outside waiting their turn.
We're fortunate that we live near to some stunning coast in Northumberland and the Borders, but it was a very special place.
Enjoy your planning fella, I've currently got the maps out for Spain and Portugal, it's a proper faff.

Another route for the bucket list? https://www.northeast250.com/see-the-route/

Included in this is the B9031 which passes Pennan of Local Hero fame, and close by you can see the Cairngorms on a clear day. Hardly any traffic on it and with enough bends to keep you awake and not staring too much at the scenery. Bit of a trek to the White Sands of Morar which is where the beach is

I stayed in Arbroath for three months in 2018 when The Open was last at Carnoustie. It isn’t the nicest place in Scotland and most places I ate were pretty terrible however there was one that I visited many times. It certainly wasn’t flash, but it was great value and the food was always excellent. I see it is still going.

Thanks Mark. We weren't planning on eating there, just buying some Arbroath Smokies to take back and have for breakfast next morning. However your suggestion is logged.  :thumb:
