Strange....

The live feed for this black box thingy, where did you tap into, was it an ignition live or direct to the battery ?

It was this:

http://accessory-fusebox.co.uk/

I connected it up as per the instructions and it’s been running fine since I’ve had it since February. I’ve had my tomtom and my Oxford’s connected to it and I’ve been using the strom most days - with both tomtom and oxfords.

For some reason it took over my ignition system and if the bike was standing and in neutral, I could take the key out and she still ran. With the red butting depressed and the engine off, taking the key out meant all the lights were still on and all the dashboard was still lit up as though the ignition was fully on. Really strange.

Anyway, that’s the last time I repeat something like this with unknown electrical gizmos. And that was a few quid and loads of time completely wasted.

OK .. both ..

If your accessory box was faulty the only part inside that can go wrong is the relay, throwing 12v down the brake light circuit direct from the battery.

Not sure how that would would affect the ignition though because the circuit fuse would blow.

Stranger things can happen though , glad you've got it fixed .. 👍

Did you try contacting the supplier or is it bin and done, no questions asked?
Very odd indeed for such a device to interfere with the ignition since turning the key should always break the circuit. I have such a fuse box myself, as do many others on here, might be worth speaking to the supplier if only to ascertain this was definitely the issue and that you haven't happened upon a coincidence which has wasted your money on the otherwise useful, and previously working, relay box.

That 'unknown electrical gizmo' (or at least one very similar) has been on my bike for  some years now, and it's predecessor for a few years before that. There are a lot of owners on here who have similar and it's the first time I've heard it have a fault like this.
It would have been nice to know what the fault was before binning it. I'm sure the supplier would like to know too?

One quick thing to try, take the main fuse out the fuse box, if it still does it then you can send it me back to sort out, not heard of one doing that before, but if it's at fault I'll repair/replace.

Thanks for the offer. I’ll phone ‘em first thing to see if it’s still in the bin. I told him to ditch it. If they’ve still got it then I’ll send it back to you, but I don’t think I want another one. It’s cost me time and money so I’m not really sure I want to risk it again.

If you can get hold of it for me to look at that would be good. There's hundreds of them out in the wild and I'm not aware of any other presenting the same issue. PM me your email and I'll refund the PayPal.

To stay in the theme of this website, bugger the electrics. WHAT TYRES did you choose?

Tyres…? Oh yeah, those. Black ones of course….

Got the bike back this morning. New tyres (black ones), oil change, filters changed, MOT and of course, my electrics back to normal. The invoice says: “Continuity breaking when wires around the battery tested. Traced to fault with aftermarket fuse box. Removed fuse box and system tested as expected”.

So, after flipping the plastic I went for a good run to wear the tyres in and now she’s back and safely tucked up in bed.

I just can’t get my head round how on earth Bigpie's relay can cause the ignition to stay on!  It’s not connected to the ignition, but to the brake light feed???  I can’t help wonder if whilst fitting/removing the relay other wires were disturbed which was the actual fault???  We may never know!! Mind you electrics are as weird as women!!!   :stirpot:

I don't know mate. Electrics have a mind of their own. It’s all done now and the bikes running again so that’s all I’m concerned about. Happy man again…!

Silly question, but had you jet washed the bike prior to the fault showing?

Bikes in for an MOT today, but when it comes back I'll be feeding 12v to the brake light circuit and see what happens, might redesign to include a diode on the trigger just incase, it's shouldn't ever back feed, but have added a check for this in the pre-shipping checks in the mean time.
Happy to send a refund or another though.
