Will a 2016 engine fit a 2010 bike DL650 Vstrom
« on: January 27, 2021, 17:34:07 »
Hi All,

Does anyone know if a 2016 DL650 engine is compatible, will fit etc in a 2010 DL650.
I've got a 2010 model which lost all its oil through a fractured oil cooler pipe on the motorway and its knocking badly.  I've found a 2016 low mileage replacement but its out of a 2016 bike.... Any help much appreciated

That won't work. There was a major change to the bike between 2011 and 2012.

As Martin has said, different ECU and connections also.
The SV650 2003 on (fuel  injected) might well have the same bottom end?

How bad is it knocking, and is it burning oil?
I have seen the likes of Slick50 bring things back to life to a degree?

There is also something called Ametech - it helped a friends classic MG?

Good luck  :thumb:

Hi blokes
thanks for your help, yeah I agree...after further investigations I can confirm that the motor transplant would probably end up being very complicated and costly.  I'll probably end up stripping it and assessing the damage :haha:.  The knocking is too bad for the bike to be reliable transport ### but the crank may have survived and may just need a set of shells.  I'll post results as and when,  although a low mileage replacement 2004 - 2011 motor does seem preferable if I could find one.  Or even a decent crank providing there's no other damage.
Thanks again for your help  :ty:

A note on the wiring harness difference, the K4 - K6 Wee has a 16 bit ECU, while the K7 - L1 Wee has a 32 bit ECU. Maybe investigate the possibility of a complete SV 650 motor transplant, similar to what was done to the Vee, discussed in https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,3217.0.html. The SV transplant would entail a lot of extra work (basically a donor bike for the harness, ECU, etc) but it should be a doable project.

On one hand that was rotten luck, although on the other it could have caused you a serious accident on the motorway. Regarding your query . To complicate things further the 2009 K9 and the 2010 LO models which look identicle, have different frames. The engine bars for the K9 do not fit the LO. and vice versa. Then there's the problem of an old stock K9 being registered in 2010 which again can catch out the unwary when ordering parts. The only way to tell for sure is to check the Registration Document I know this because I bought a 2010 bike on a 60 plate and  found out it was a K9 and not an LO. It didn't matter to me as I didn't set out to buy an LO. There may be other differences. Suffice to say the LO engine may not slot into the K9 frame.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Blimey, bit of a mine field trying to get the right one then...

Turn it into a project and whammy the 1000 motor in there lol

I can confirm that a twin spark sv650 engine probably up to the same year (although you would have to check that)will fit in and work fine. I think the only difference is slightly higher lift cams for more performance higher in the rev range.
