Not a bike topic but whatever!
« on: March 04, 2010, 12:40:54 »
I am looking at buying a Landrover Discovery 2. I've seen one for £5000. Its a TD5 2001. 100k miles. VGC. ES model.

What do you think?

I know they are not economical and so so reliability, I just love them.

One day, someone showed me a glass of water that was half full.  And he said, "Is it half full or half empty?"  So I drank the water.  No more problem.

Does it matter what we think then? I managed to dissuade my step-daughter from squandering her savings on one of these monsters, and what did she do? Go and buy an early Merc A series - one of the few cars with a worse reliability record than a Disco 2........

Anyway, if it floats your boat and you're not doing big mileage - enjoy.

Make sure both gearboxes are OK (high & low), at that mileage you could run into a 'bad' one. Beware of little blebs on the door bottoms, that's a sign the steel frame is rusting and then bi-metalic corroding with the ally outer panel - expensive to fix (had a 'disco before...). best of luck, Bry.

p.s. £5k will get you a tidy Sorento, get a Daystar lift kit and some 255's and it will go anywhere - mine does !!!

if you have a huge garage with a lift and a mechanic to go with it, then buy it. my brother has one and is always fixing something on it. and its sooooooooo slow

I work on 4x4 for a living do them all, freelanders, discos , defenders..they maybe the best off road but my do they go wrong ......there's always something , gearboxes , transfer box , steering boxes spilling oil everywhere, air suspension bags , td5 injectors failing (fills sump with diesel ,oil level gets so high they run on there own oil BANG.

The best 4x4 you could buy for that money would be a landcruzer or import prado with the 3l turbo diesel engine .......there bullit proof..may not go off road as good as a defender but how serious are you about going off road, just up muddy tracks and farms ect. it will do it all and not spend half its life in a workshop......japs are best.

there's a saying in Australia
"If you want to go into the bush take a landrover, if you want to come back again take a landcruzer"   lol

If it was me I'd go for the Discovery, but I have a bias towards Solihull products.

Another vote for Jap 4 x 4's

I have a Mitsubishi Outlander and its brilliant - 60 000 miles and its needed nothing but consumables like tyres, brake pads, etc.

When I come to replace it I will be buying Japanese again

I don't think the Korean cars have the same build quality if your going off-road
C'mon spring I want to get riding

The ol' girl has had a 2" lift, Koni heavy track adjustable shockers, 8x18" Rimfire alloys with 255/60 General Grabber AT2's, micro spotlights and Malaysian home market grille.

I've had a look at the Outlander, a bit out of my price range.

Anyone know about the Shogun Sport?

As far as I'm aware the Shogun Sport is based on the L200 pick up, which is almost unbreakable. You can pick these up for very little cash and you do get alot of car for Your money.

Looked at a couple of TD5s when we chopped our Scenic for a heavier towcar. Ended up with an X-Trail. V pleased. Bro-In-Law has had various probs with his 2000 TD5 but it will do all he wants and take a 3 tonne trailer too...
No bike at present.......
