Do Glees rattle in neutral?
« on: June 26, 2020, 23:24:06 »
Having tried a 2015 and 2020  650 back to back recently, I noticed the Glee rattled a bit in neutral and went quieter when depressing the clutch. The new model was much quieter ticking over with the clutch in much the same. So is this a noisy engine example or are the latest beaky versions all quieter?  Thoughts on this welcome please.

I can't comment on newer bikes but my K5 (2005) doesn't change sound when the clutch is pulled in.

If you have a centre or paddock stand, does the rear wheel rotate slightly when in gear but the clutch pulled in? If you have any clutch slip I guess that could cause some noise variation.

I doubt you have any clutch basket issues, that tends to be the 1000... Although the springs can seize up if the bike is left standing for long periods of time. Again unlikely but trying to think of possible issues...

Perfectly normal, I'd say. My glee always sounded a bit quieter with the clutch lever pulled to the bar. Not really a rattle as such with the lever out, just a louder drumming. Just the unloaded parts of the gear train spinning, as with many bikes, I imagine.

Having had two Wees and one Glee I'd say there is a mechanical noise that is deadened when the clutch lever is pulled back. I suspect the clutch basket has some play in it which gives it a light knocking sound. This can be much amplified by a sump guard which throws the sound upwards. My Vee had the beginings of the usual clutch knock that can be cured by the "Sharealike|" modification.  On the 650, think of this as a "feature" rather than a "fault". Stay in gear, keep the throttle open and don't give it another thought.

My Varadero does it.
SWMBO's GSX14 does it

Most Yamaha engines can be heard at 100yrds.
