MRA Vario screen anyone?
« on: May 03, 2020, 12:13:17 »
Like many I found that the standard screen on my 2018 650 XT fairly rubbish. I purchased one of those add on wind deflectors and with a couple of modifications I found it better than the original but not brilliant. Recently I added some bar risers to the bike which I found made it more comfortable to ride. Unfortunately I now find that although I don't get any buffeting there is plenty of wind noise. I fitted a MRA Vario onto my previous bike, 700 Honda Transalp, and found it really good. I don't want to fork out over a hundred quid on one for the Strom and find it disappointing. I'm around 5'9" tall and would like any feedback from others that have fitted the Vario.
Cheers, Nick.

Search motorcycle screen spoiler https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motorcycle-Universal-Clip-On-Windscreen-Wind-Screen-Extension-Spoiler-Deflector/283785931972 the Vario bolt on spoilers are available without the full screen for £70 ish.

When I had 2012 650 I purchased it used with MRA Screen. It had no buffeting but the noise produced by it was unbearable. It was low frequency boom-boom very loud, just like you put your head in somebody's subwoofer. Then I purchased Puig, no low frequency noise but some buffeting. Eventually I bought Givi Airflow and swapped mirrors for Aprilia Tuono ones and there it was. No buffeting and no noise... at all...
Now I'm on my 3rd V-Strom and all of them used only Givi Airflow since day one. Both 2014 and 2018 DL1000 came new with OEM screen and I rode them like that from the dealer to my house and it was hard with all the noise and buffeting even for just that one ride.

I've got the MRA Vario on my 1000. Buffeting is much improved over the standard screen but is still fairly noisy. I never go on the bike without ear plugs. Have never used them before in 40 years riding.

I also use ear plugs but the noise problem with MRA was still there with plugs. The ear plugs would cut the wind noise but low frequency booooming was still there.

I have a MRA Vario on the Varadero.

Well I have a CBF one, but they have the same mount points.

I'll be honest an say its smaller than the tall Givi tinted thing that the previous owner put on.
But doesn't have the same weather protection for the top half.

It's taller than the stock screen but well out of my sight line.

I get very little turbulence compared to the stock screen and about the same as the huge Givi.

I like the fact it's not massive and in my sight line but still keeping the airflow smooth around me.

I would never have paid the retail price for it before, but I will buy another when the time comes for a new bike.

I'm lucky my bike came with a Vario screen. I'm 6'-2" and it really works for me.

I've taken a look at the Givi Airflow on Amazon and according to the measurements given it's about 120 mm taller than the standard screen. If that's the case it will mean I have to look through the screen instead of over it. Not really ideal, for me anyway. :-(

I had an MRA Vario on my DL1000 K6 , it worked a treat, I could happily ride along at 80+mph with my visor up.
Personally I think most of the buffeting is caused by the OEM mirrors, in my case triumph tiger 800 mirrors solved the issue

@ Nick, I have my Givi Airflow set low. The bottom screen on the middle fixings and the top one almost as low as it can go. The top of the screen sits about 350 mm above the centre of the handlebars and is under the level of my chin.
I look over the screen quite easily and I'm 5' 10" (plus a little bit).

Yes, Givi Airflow is all about adjustment. I guess the advertisement shows its size fully extended.

Another vote for changing the mirrors. My 1000 has the MRA which suits me well at 6ft 1. But it also has Aprilia mirrors.  When we changed the mirrors on my son's Derbi Terra Adventure to Aprilia style,  the noise and buffeting from the screen was virtually eliminated.

Thanks for that. I have bar risers on the bike. Can you let me know the measurement from the high point on the console to the top of the screen please? My screen is around 190mm.

Well, mine is DL1000 2018 but if it helps, from the highest point of the dash to the top of the screen 19 cm. That is, using lowest mounting holes for the base screen and adjustable screen fully closed to its lowest settings.
In my case, as I use mid holes it is 2 cm more.
However, I'm 6'2.5 and I use the base screen on mid holes and adjustable screen half way extended. I have a lot of space looking over the screen.

I measured from the top of the console but even so that looks around 40mm higher than the standard screen.

@ bosnjo the bottom screen is on the middle fasteners...the top is not quite all the way down, it might go another 25mm or so.
It can't be fitted anywhere else on mine as the satnav holder is on the top fasteners and it gets in the way if I try to fit the screen on the bottom fasteners.
