Weeping brake bleed nipple
« on: April 24, 2020, 09:16:16 »
Morning
I have been giving my Vstrom 650 (2005) a service during lockdown.
Have replaced brake fluid like I would on any of my previous bikes using tube, jam jar and spanner, all gone well, only fluid coming out of the caliper, no air bubbles, on all 3 calipers.  However, few hours later I noticed 2 of the 3 calipers had a slight weep round the bleed nipple where it comes out of the caliper. Gave them a wipe and a slight tweak.  That seemed to solve the problem on one caliper but the other continues to leak.
I have consulted the trusty haynes and checked the torque to the specifed value, all OK.
Any thoughts?
Have read a bit about teflon tape?  Is this advisable?
Have read about speed bleeders too with the sealent on the threads......any thoughts?
Any opinions welcome.

Bleed screws DO NOT seal on the threads, they seal on the tapers on he bleed screw itself.I recommend you do not use anything on the threads. Are you sure they are leaking or is it residual fluid left inside the bleed nipples.Give them a squirt with a touch of brake cleaner and see if they still leak.I was in the motor trade for 55years and have never seen a bleed nipple leak, are you sure you haven't over tightened them and damaged the threads.

Is that leaking when you Squeeze the lever or when the bike's just stood?

@ endintears - Thanks for reply. Bike been stood overnight, went out to check and a slight wet ring around bottom of nipple where it comes out the caliper.

@Ianmc - Thanks for reply.  Will give the nipple and surround area another clean this morning as you suggest and have a look again later.  Quite sure I didn't overtighten.  Like I say did these the same as all my previous bikes, close nipple to stop flow and little nip up.  Double checked with haynes and torque wrench.        Take your point on not using nothing on the threads themselves I.e PTFE tape.
Any thoughts on http://www.speedbleeder.com/index.htm

Just been on the Speedbleeder website and cannot believe that they sell thread sealant.I wouldn’t bother personally, plus they wouldn’t be cheap from The US of A.

@Ianmc
You are correct should be no requirment for thread tape or sealants.
In fact their use can cause problems by introducing contamination into the system.

OK, so avoid speedbleeders.
Replace nipple altogether with a new one?  Or detach caliper and examine the whole thing thoroughly?

What Ianmc says .

It's probably left over brake fluid in the nipple.

Never ever use anything on the threads .

Unless you've rounded where the spanner goes there shouldn't be anything wrong with your old ones, at most remove them and give them a clean

After bleeding I usually give a squirt of WD40 down the centre of the nipple then blow it out with an airline and add some acf50 down the hole. Reason is that any remaining brake fluid in the nipple will attract water and may cause corrosion. Have serviced a few bikes over the years where the cross hole in the nipple is clogged with chrystalised fluid and the brakes won't bleed. Not really related to original post but worth bearing in mind if you buy an old bike, particularly if the rubber caps are missing from bleed nipples.

It's a shame you can't suck dry a caliper bleed nipple
