ABS Light stays on
« on: April 12, 2020, 16:35:57 »
I have just finished putting my 650 AL2 back together after a near complete strip.
In these strange times I was unable to take it for a test ride before taking it for MOT.
I noticed on the ride there (less than 1/2 mile) the ABS light didn't go out.
When I got home I have checked all the fuses I can see, checked the connection in case I missed one on the rebuild, undone the sensors cleaned and reinstalled them, taken the battery off again for 20 min but still light stays on, We have a small car park right next to us so am able to get over the 5MPH that should turn the light off.
The ABS worked before, so must assume I have done something, but what?
Is there a way to test the sensors as google has sent me in circles when I tried to ask that.
Much appreciate any help,
Iam.

start with checking the resistance across the sensors, if they're both the same give or take they are okay. but if one is open circuit or significantly higher resistance then you've got a bad one, the correct specs are in the FSM but this should see you right. also check the connectors while your at it, some times just remaking the connections is enough to get it all working again.

Position of sensors, if they've been removed and replaced, seems a firm favourite on here. Check that rings and sensors are correctly mounted and spaced.

Nothing wrong with double or even triple checking your work.

Sounds to me like a faulty sensor, It's possible that when you dismantled everything you may have caused some damage, maybe a split wire internally ..?

Thanks for replies, I did try and check resistance earlier and the value just flashed up and then dissappeard from the screen. Will have another go tomorrow.
Didn't realise the gap was so critical so will check that too.

Rusty Nuts is correct, the gap is critical. however I didn't think it was possible to change it on the Strom, are there any shims or spacers? I don't remember seeing any on mine.

No the sensor is not adjustable on a Glee. Just ensure the bolt is tight. I would also check the sensor and abs rings are clean.

Thanks for replies,
Well have spent the day checking and measuring so,
Front sensor 0.494 Meg-ohms, Rear sensor 0.451 Meg-ohms
Front sensor gap 0.88 mm, Rear gap 0.83 mm
The resistance was checked at the connector for each sensor and the ABS unit plug, both where very close.
Are these reading what would be expected as I can't find what the sensors resistance should be.

I did manage to troll the web and found an old forum post about an ABS port similar to the dealer mode, makes the ABS led blink a code if there is a fault, and wouldn't you know it it threw up 3 codes and if the other post is to be believed they are,

Code 35 Main unit error, I.e. broken fuse or relay, wire short, faulty ABS control unit, Faulty hydraulic unit.

Code 45 Wheel sensor circuit open

Code 61 Hydraulic unit failure

So none of them sound too great

Is there a way to manually cycle the ABS pump as a test, as at this point its looking like a replacement unit is required

Those codes allude to a power issue. bad fuse/connection or connector not fully seated I would say is most likely.

OK. I've done a full continuity trace and test on every wire connected to the abs unit and all checked out, so no broken connections.

Can anyone think of another test I can do before I search for a replacement unit?

Without a Suzuki diagnosic computer which can operate the the pump separately your only option is to ride it and try to make the ABS kick in.
The main ABS unit is divided internally into two, front and back.

Say for "example" the issue is the front system and the ABS light is on, this doesn't stop the Rear ABS operating because it's separate.

If either the front or back is working and the opposite isn't this says to me it's a seized piston inside the pump.

If you don't feel brave enough to test the ABS your other option , if you've done all your tests correctly, is to take it to a dealership.

I have a small car park next to me and have tried to get the abs to kick in, rear is easy just locks the wheel. Front was more scary but still locked it up.
So looks like replacement
Ah well.
Thanks for suggestions.

I will add though, it's rare for the pump to go completely.

In your strip down, was the pump completely removed and unplugged and the brake lines taken off..?

No the pump was never removed or unplugged, nor the sensors, until there was the problem. I did replace the rubber brake lines for braided and bled the system before powering the bike up.
I have had a read on a few articles and in the past the abs seemed to be a problem for some of the 2012 models.

Might it be an ABS pump bleeding problem?
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

I've read of some issues with the ABS pumps on 2012 models (poss on Stromtrooper), usually associated with the rear brake. I thought it was related to people not changing the brake fluid...
Hope you get it sorted soon.

Just a thought:
Is your speedo still working? I ask because I once put my front wheel in the wrong way round which resulted in no speedo and the ABS light staying on. It is also quite easy to bend the sensor rings when storing the wheels, yes I've done that aswell.
Remeber sometimes it is the simplist of things that cause the biggest headache.

Take the wheel sensors off and look at the surface, are they clean and undamaged?
In my defence, she did leave me unsupervised.

Speedo still works, wheel on the right way round.
The rings are as flat as could be, no warp
I've changed the brake fluid every 2 years, just because it's an easy job.
I've bled the brakes using a large seringe and hose to draw the fluid through.
The surface of the sensors appear smooth and  unmarked (though I don't know what the resistance should be I did get  a reading)

Again thanks for the suggestions.

I will try and get a replacement from ebay, then I can open up mine and have a proper look

Before you go replacing the pump, this thread on Stromtrooper suggests checking the connectors for corrosion, in particular those at the front of the bike under the tank on the right. It'd be worth a look if you have time as they are prone to corrosion  :violence-smack:

It's also suggested checking all ground connections to the ABS, and ensuring the sensors and rings are thoroughly clean.
