High rev clutch slip and TC flashing?
« on: April 06, 2020, 20:38:52 »
Alright blokes,  title pretty much explains it.

Having a good run out this evening and half hour in to the ride I give the beans going up a hill in 4th, it boosts along up to 70mph about 6k revs then still giving it some, the clutch slips and the revs go up to around 9k and the tc flashes?

??????????????

Silly question, but are you absolutely sure it was clutch slip and not wheelspin? What was the road surface like?

First of all , is your clutch adjusted properly ?.
You should have some play in the lever when fully out.
If not this means your clutch is still engaged slightly which will make it slip when in the higher rev range.

The reason why your TC is flashing is because the ECU thinks the rear wheel is spinning.
Basically the revs are to high compared to the speed you are traveling.

On my Veek I had similar after using it for the first time after a lay off, turned out it was the clutch lever pivot seizing up slightly, so the lever was not fully returning. Stopped and lubed and all was well.
I've been asked why I have 3 bikes, well that's because I'm not allowed any more.

I would say it's TC doing it's job and you've started to lose traction. As far as I'm aware the TC uses the ABS sensors. What you describe is exactly what happens when the rear wheel spins up. Pulling a wheelie will also activate TC but the revs won't rise before the electronics cut in

Road surface was perfect so definitely not wheel spin.  I think you've hit the nail on the head Kwackboy, need to have a look at my clutch set up.  My issue is I've put adjustable levers on and I've now got excess clutch cable to deal with.

Aha! We didn't know that. I only asked because a certain Nissan turbo I had (1988 Bluebird) convinced me the clutch was slipping till I sussed it.

:bow-blue: You were right Kwackboy,  slackened everything off then went back through it all step by step, squirting lube about like I knew what I was doing. Set the lever free play to about 15mm and Hello presto everything works again, no tc flashing or clutch slipping.

Glad you nipped it in the bud early because the end result of a maladjusted clutch is a fried clutch ..  :thumb:

Glad it's just adjustment but in my experience 15mm doesn't sound right, more typical would be 3 or 4mm (1/8 inch) free play at the lever.

Sorry just realised you probably mean 15mm at the end of the lever but with a short lever still sounds a bit slack.

Nah there's about 3 or 4mm between the lever and housing which equates to roughly 15mm at the lever end. Either way whatever I did it worked, thank feck
