Dropped It !!!!!
« on: March 06, 2020, 16:11:29 »
Blue sky and dry roads, so out I went.
Chatsworth, Buxton, Cat & Fiddle. Great riding and not too busy.
I stopped in a layby on the Cat & Fiddle for a photo and dropped the bike when I stopped.   :bawl: Don't know how, just came to a stop and tipped it over.
Only damage seems to be indicator and a pulled muscle from trying to save it. First time I've dropped it and pride dented more than anything.
Was very grateful to a car driving fellow biker who stopped to help me pick it up.
Anyway :

Glad you're OK. Happens to everyone at some point...  :shy:

Good to hear someone was there to help you pick it up.

Another member of club. Indicator lens broke but bulb OK. Clutch switch came loose. Small ding  in side panel due to crash bar mounted fog lights which needed touching up. Luckily I had 2 others to help me pick it up.

I'm on my 3rd V-Strom. First one, DL650 '12 never dropped. The next one DL1000 '14 dropped twice, both times when stationary (just like you). The actual one, DL1000 '18 yet to be dropped.
You just have to learn propper technique how to pick up your bike by yourself. There is a bunch of videos on youtube on how to do it.

There are lots of "how to pick a dropped bike up" type videos, most are pretty good but I've not yet found the one that starts with your leg trapped under a horizontal bike.

Cheers everyone.

Having thought it through, I think I was looking at the view and the camber of the road meant the ground was just a bit further away than I was expecting. By the time my foot touched down, the bike was already tipping.

Lesson learned........ PAY ATTENTION

Camber caught me out turning my Africa Twin on a quiet back road - down she went, trapping my foot underneath it. A few tense minutes of wriggling, shoving and swearing and I was free. Managed to pick it up (with a struggle) and sorted cosmetic damage later. Fortunately my foot escaped with extensive bruising. Always a learning experience!

At least you were on a quiet road, TigerJohn. My leg trapping was done on the chunnel train. Nowhere to hide, people fore and aft. I was swinging left to put my front wheel up against the little kerb when the r.h. pannier clipped the protruding stairwell enclosure. Severe bruising at the start of a 600 mile riding day, but even more severe embarrasment!

Glad you’re OK, my only advice would be don’t try and save the bike save yourself because once that V Strom is going, it’s going  :thumb:

Good point, but instinct wants to save the bike first.   :)
Lack of experience didn't help, but both the bike I live to fight again.

Welcome to the club. Crash bars can help save serious damage to the bike. You could also shorten the indicator stalks to that the don't get damaged so easy, http://www.DL650.org/photos/pbsoluces/Alain27/clignos/ , but the mod may not appeal to everyone.
