Brakes compared to Honda cbf600 s 2009
« on: September 03, 2019, 09:57:48 »
Hello to all vstromers, I've been riding bikes since I was 15, cb100, cd175, k3 175,  R5 350, cb250,  that was about 50 years ago,  so having been off a bike for nearly 30 years I have a cbf600 sa, it's been fine, but I recently have been attracted to a vstrom 650 xt, having read many articles about this bike, I'm concerned about the brakes not being as efficient as mine on the CBF 600sa. Can anyone give me advice about this, thanks.

 :welcome:

If you have reservations about the brakes, best thing to do is go for a test ride and decide.

Never ridden the CBF 600, but I have a 2016 650XT, and the brakes are pretty decent, though progressive, nothing like as good as the 2014 GSXR750 that I recently sold which could lock the wheel or put you over the handlebars a bit too easily (they were very efficient), but way better than my 1977 CB400T Dream, which even with new pads and hoses and a rebuild master cylinder and caliper are JUST adequate! The XT brakes are absolutely good enough, obviously they have ABS, so locking brakes should not be an issue, but I suspect aftermarket pads and hoses my help make them even better.

At the end of the day whether you like the brakes or not is likely to be subjective, so best to snag a test ride.

I came from a BMW 1200 gs to the 650 strom (2017) and the brakes are in comparison just adequate. however I am getting used to them after almost 2 yrs. the rear brake on the strom is however just as good if not better so stopping in a hurry I now use front and rear whereas on the beemer I just used the front.

Thanks for the replies. The front brakes are actually bigger on the vstrom,so I thought they would be at least as good as the neilsons on the Honda. Both bikes have abs.

I had a 2005 CBF 600 SA from new up until 2014 when I got my V Strom 650 I noticed from the off front brake was not as good as the Honda rear brake was about the same the Stroms brakes are adequate I have been thinking of fitting aftermarket braided lines anyone done this and if so does it make much of a improvement.
