2019 DL650 gears
« on: August 02, 2019, 12:14:12 »
This is my third DL650 I had a 2005 and a 2013 and on both of them the gear change was like a micro switch  possibly the best gearbox I have ever used but my 2019 is very notchy and neutral is hard to find. I have adjusted the clutch to the minimum amount of slack but its still the same. Has anybody else noticed this with the 2019 model?

My 2018's gearbox is as you describe your earlier models.

Does the chain need a slight adjustment?

My 2019 650XT is fine.  Could well be a tight chain.

Tried the chain was 28mm now 40mm free play no difference. I will try changing the oil don't know what the dealer used on the first service

Was it OK before it was serviced?

No I just assumed it was nochy because it was new. Its not as bad as an old BMW or Moto guzzi more like a Yamaha but nothing like as good as my old DL650.
I wondered if they had changed the clutch in 2019 but johnboy has a 2019 and his is OK

They may have put the wrong oil in it but you should not change it as that will give the dealer an excuse to blame you. I think you should take it back to the dealer and complain. They may say the usual old " they all do that" but you know that is not true and can tell them. It should not be hard to find neutral, that is not safe and it must be sorted out.

This bike being a 2019 model , how many miles has it covered ?
Sometimes but not all, a new gearbox can be as you described until a few thousand miles has been covered but problems finding neutral is rare if the clutch has been adjusted correctly.
Not doubtful of your abilities but are you sure you have the correct adjustment..?
Is there anything impeding your gear change lever ?, it maybe stiff and need lubing ..? Manufacturers are very tight with grease on new bikes .

These are just some possibilities ....

Yes the clutch is adjusted correctly and yes I have only done 1600 miles I shall see how it goes for the next 4k miles and thanks for the reminder about the grease I shall take the linkage apart and grease it up
Thanks again for all the advise I will update you all in 4k miles time

Linkage?

My 2016 wasn't notchy, it was OK, but then I found it harder and harder to get it in gear.  Turned out the rubbers at the gear linkage had perished (after only 20k, of which 18k of that is sitting in 6th on motorways!) and was causing huge slack and the gearbox was terrible. Wouldn't go in gear, false neturals, no feeling in slotting into gear.

Ended up removing the lot and using solid linkage connected to the original thread.  No more rubber, no more slack.

Have a look at the linkage, see how much sideways play there is in it.

Surely they are just covers, rubber boots?  Not part of the linkage itself?
