Help with a missing nut?
« on: June 14, 2019, 15:27:27 »
Hi,

I'm pretty new to bike maintenance, so I would appreciate some help with this please.

I just had my tank off to do some stuff, and at the end I've been left with two of these washer things. Do you know where they go? And if they are necessary?

I also noticed a possibly missing nut? I'm sure there used to be one here, but it's gone now. Is this necessary to have on the bike?

Thanks very much.

In general, manufacturers don't add bits and pieces unless they are needed (or look cool). Those collars are needed to stop the fastener from crushing the plastic body panels. You should be able to identify where they belong because the hole in the plastic is bigger than the fastener... about a collar-thickness too big!

The 'hole' is the end of the swingarm bolt, there's a nut on the other end. You're missing a boot scuff rubber, there is one on both sides normally. Not serious at all but you will damage the finish on the frame there with your right heel and dirt will infiltrate the hole.

The sleeved washers are important, they come from under the mount bolts at the front of the tank. They provide solid but cushioned bolt fixings. Best put them back............ :shy:
So how's it going so far then?

The front of the tank is held with one long bolt on a steel mount.
Those top hat washers look like they go in the rubber boot that clamps down the tank under the seat .. just a guess though .

Hi, thanks for the reply.

Can you be more specific on where the washers go please?

I'm not sure what you mean by the 'mount bolts'.

Thanks.

At the front end of the tank there are two bolts which pass through rubber mounts. The sleeved washers should be fitted from the under side of the rubbers, flat washer part then rests on frame mount holes and you screw the bolts through the sleeves.

Haynes manual (if you have one) Chapter 4 - 2.24a.
So how's it going so far then?

Thanks everyone.

It was a bit of a pain but I pulled off the plastics again and put them back in.

Cheers.

My GPX is just as you described..........

Shall we write our own repair manuals?

Perhaps not, eh!
