engine noise in top gear
« on: May 28, 2019, 19:57:40 »
hi all !
have any of you experience a ''whistling'' noise from the
engine-gear box,  when shift in 6th or 5th gear ???
a friend is testing 650s for sale to buy one and some of them
are doing it.
mine is doing so in 6th,  but I thought it was because of worn gears,
as the history of the bike is unknown,  don t have any issues though
the last 35000km that I own it.
I ve come in that question because one of the bikes tested and does it
is in mint condition and the one and only owner is a trustful friend,
very careful and strictly with the bike s service and smooth in riding it.

I recall reading about complaints of gearbox whine, only in certain gears, on the earlier model V-Strom. Those with knowledge, spoke of it being due to the straight cut gears, that are known for often causing the whine. If you make use the site's search facility, I'm sure that you will receive a few hits in your search. Basically, as long as the engine oil level is OK and the chain is lubed, the advice is to wear ear plugs when out riding.

I did the search before write the post, didn t find
anything relative though.
as it s all about the cutting as you say, there s nothing to worry then.
I wear earplugs when I go to bed, for riding I prefer
a louder muffler !   :happydance: hahaha

Most Wee’s up to the 2012 upgrade do this. Its more noticeable in 6th gear. There was an engine upgrade for the 2012 model including machining upgrades to quieten the engine down.Don’t worry about it.

If anyone wants to read more on gearbox whine, perhaps try the wording in the search field: straight cut gears. Typical examples, https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=35349.msg354050#msg354050 and https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=26586.msg264915#msg264915. Take note of the last post in the latter link. Maybe it is worth having a look at?
