moving the top box back
« on: April 20, 2019, 20:11:37 »
hi folks is there a way to move the standard top box backs have the Suzuki branded box and panniers on my 2009 DL650 grand touring, the wife finds it uncomfortable as it pushes her into me with in turn makes me feel cramped and after 30 mins her hips are sore so would like to be able to move the box a bit to give more room

There are some solutions on here (use the search and I will have a look too). They apply to specific Top Box combinations though.

thanks for that, that may just do the trick, I'm quite large at 6 ft and 17 stone however the wifes only 5 ft and 7 1/2 stone and I was quite surprised how cramped it felt considering she's only wee, we took a run from Hamilton to the the green welly in tyndrum about 150  miles round trip and when we got back she swore she wasn't getting back on the bike as her hips were agony and I'm sure I've left a 2 circle imprint on the bottom of the fuel tank lol

Have you got a 'back rest' on the top box?
We tried one in the early days but my wife found it pushed her too far forward.  She is happy to lean on the box without the rest using the back protector in her jacket as the 'cushion'.

Hello Mick no there's no back rest, I may try her on it without the box and see how she goes ,It could the fact that she like me had never been on a bike before so not used to sitting in that position and with me be an inexperienced rider my throttle/brake control won't be the smoothest may make it uncomfortable, when I'm on the bike myself there's loads of room but with her small frame on the back I'm definitely pushed forward

New rider, and new passenger, I'm sure as experience comes she will learn to relax more, and get her comfort on the bike.
Many a time I have had new passengers complain of this, often it takes a few runs to get them to relax, making more room for the lass will no doubt help, maybe a sheepskin cover for the seat, I have one that is designed for a horse riding saddle, and makes a big difference on a long ride, but no good In rain...

actually I was worried about that at the green welly on Saturday , pulled in loads of bikers got her to get off before manoeuvring the bike to park it up, would have been embarrassing if I dropped it trying to turn it in a tight space lol

Worth a shot but Deb thinks with the top box (back rest) it is much easier than without.
You mention your throttle control (that will get better) may be causing a bit of a problem, well, without the top box (back rest) there is nothing to help support your good lady if you get a bit hot with the accelerator, she will need to hang on to you or the passenger hand grabs making it more strenuous.
If neither of you have ridden much before keep the mileage down for a while, it is a 'different' seating position and will take some getting used too.
Good luck, I'm sure you'll sort it :thumb:

Have you tried a short spin without the top box, just to see if that is the issue? See how much further back she can comfortably sit, and work from there.

Every time I change bikes I have this problem, So I get a piece of sheet aluminium cut it to the desired shape, attach it to the bikes luggage rack. and mount my Givi top box mounting plate to it about 4" back,

You just need to be very careful moving the top box as the Suzuki manual specifically cautions against this.  It could easily leave your insurance invalidated.  Insurance companies will use anything they can to get out of paying up.

its a ridiculous design, I removed the top box and got the wee wifey to sit back on the bike and its much more comfortable, and I'm not cramped or pushed forward, did notice the back of her rear end is almost on the raised bolts so that plate that moves it back 80cms should do the trick, I will mention it to the insurance company as a mod and see what they say ,cover my back so to speak
