MPG / Tank Range / Range from last dot to zip
« on: April 04, 2019, 08:49:01 »
Hi All

I've got a 2017 650 V Strom, not sure what you would call it here as I know the previous one up to 2016 was known as a Wee...

Anyway, with the new bike, and tank/engine updates, has anyone got info on MPG they get ? I'm particularly interested in the tank range.

I've topped her up to lapping against the silver thing in the tank, and 1 dot went at 45 miles, next went at 95 miles ! My previous bike which I got 50mpg out of was running out at 120 miles, looks like this one will go for a long run on one tank.

Dealer said it goes down to last dot, then when that starts running out it starts to flash and I should get some come of fuel warning light. Wondering how far people have gone with the flashing light before pulling in for a refill ?

I checked online and found the size of the tank to be 22litres.

I did see another thread on all this, but most people referred to the previous bike, but I'm wondering about range on the updated one (apologies if I've missed a topic covering this !)

Any thoughts at all ?

riding mate of mine can readily get towards 800 kms (500 miles) on his 2015 DL650. He is a steady type of rider - no real speeding nor handfuls of throttle just for the sake of it. He also lives out of the way of stop/start city confines which must help.

The Wee is up to 2011. The Glee is from 2012 onwards.

Thanks for the info, Wee then Glee...

But... what happens with the new 2017 model, as it's not really Gladius based (I think !!) ??

I'm being a bit of a "newbie" here  :dl_smiley_banghead:

The size of the tank of your 2017 650 V-Strom is not 22 litres but 20 litres. The K-models had a 22 litre tank. All the L-models have a 20 litre tank.

The tank range depends on various factors such as speed, outside temperature and the way you move your throttle.
With street legal speeds the tank range will mostly be between 250 and 310 miles.
If the fual warning of a 2017 650 is the same as a 2013 650, the first warning of the flashing last fual dot starts when you only have 4,5 litres (1 gallon) left. When there are 2,5 litres (0,55 gallon) fual left the fual indicator starts flashing wich means you have about 30 miles to find yourself a gasstation.

The easiest way to find out what your range will be is to calculate your own average consumption ( :obscene-drinkingchug: and this is not what I mean  :icon_wink:)

Adri

I think your mate is pulling your leg with 500 miles :icon_wink:  Unless he coasts down every hill, and calls his recovery service on every trip!

Lots seem to refer to generations of 650 vstroms now: gen 1 (wee), gen 2 (glee), and gen 3 (2017-on)

Mmmm, All I can say is I regularly return 72 to 74 to the gallon from my 2015 V strom 650 two up, but what you get to a tank I could not say as I never let it go below a quarter of a tank.

So based on various riding, on my 2016 DL650XT, I get:

Motorway (fully laden, panniers etc, just rider) steady 75mph - 60-62mpg
Trundling around at 40-60mph on and b roads - 65-70mpg
Mixed commuting - 55 - 60mpg

Overall average over 2500 miles 61 mpg

Best range I have got was 242 miles, but I only got 17 or so litres in so probably could have gone another 40 miles before I ran out.

I think this is good - but then again my GSXR750 has a range of about 125 miles, and only does around 35mpg on average, so everything is relative. (though 125 miles is more than enough for a 58 year old on the gixxer!)

500 miles would mean 113mpg (imperial) which seems highly unlikely!

That's about my averages.
I never let it get too low, I always fill up before anything starts flashing!!

Good point. I've squeezed 300 miles out of a 2012 glee tank. Which, as you say, is about 500 km.

I can only think that the rider may have forgotten to reset the trip counter, to record that type of fuel consumption. Besides, fuel consumption is calculated over a few tanks of fuel, not just one refuel. It's not a good thing to run the tank down to the lowest level. The fuel pump takes a major beating when the tank is run to these extremely low levels.

Hit 195 miles with 2 dots to go, then 222 miles down to one dot and it immediately started flashing with fuel sign.

Filled her up, 14.32 litres to 222 miles. That works out at 70.5 UK mpg !!! WOW !! I've never become more than 140 miles from any bike I've owned, and this one is fun to ride as well !

Add on to this, the 20 litre tank, so over a gallon of fuel still left. Blimey !

So, even when on last dot, no need to panic  :)

Thanks to everyone for all your responses in this thread  :ty:

Wow ! 500 miles is massive !

sorry everybody - I must have been tired with my last post.
My riding mate gets 500 KMS (not 500 miles) comfortably on his 2015 DL650 out of its 22 litre tank without running it to empty.  That's a conservative 24 kpl with up to 26/27 kpl on light throttle if needs be.

500 kilometres quite readily out of a 22 litre tank (NOT 500 miles).

Knowing what consumption we can achieve when on a gentle ride was tending to believe your outrageous claim!
I am sure you could easily get within 2 km/l of Rob's consumption when on a trip with him.
