Replace 650 XT gold wheels
« on: January 30, 2019, 20:03:42 »
Can any body suggest where to buy aftermarket or quality second-hand wheels to replace the lovely but infuriating gold rim spoked wheels on my 2018 XT?

The wheels are lovely but to keep them looking good takes too much of my time.

Expect to see a quality set of spoked XT wheels on here soon!

You could replace them with a set of factory cast wheels?

What is the problem and what have you done so far?

No problem, I just want to change the spoked wheels for alloys. Reckon it'll be an eBay job

Wouldn't the 10 spoke rims be correct for a 2018?

Are the 650 and 1000 wheels the same. If so I'm sure I saw some alloys for sale on here.

I would assume that they are not the same. Certainly the early bikes were different with the 1000 having larger bearings etc. I would only get wheels verified as being off the correct model and year to be sure they fit.

650 and 1000 Wheels have been historically different and I would assume they still are.

Just had a look in the Fowlers part index, they are different. Also cheaper than I expected.
Have you considered getting stainless steel spokes and drowning them in ACF50?

Been having trouble finding the correct size second-hand rims, the 10 spoked alloys are the ones I want. Think it might be a Fowlers jobbie.

Thanks blokes

Fowlers will roughly be £1400 for the pair which considering the original price of the bike new, is more than I'm willing to spend.

EBay and gumtree it is! Thanks again everyone

You need to take one with cast wheels for a test ride. Take it back with the spokes rims and see if anyone notices!

Why not have the gold rims power-coated to a mat-black (high heat). Just a bit of time and labor, to take everything apart, but it should cost far less than the cost of replacing rims and the frustration in looking for suitable replacements.

Re spoking two wheels is also not that cheap.
OK cheaper than £1400 but you will need to dismantle the wheel including spokes, tyre and bearings.
Powder coat, wait at least a week to harden then re-spoke with new spokes, new bearings and most likely new tyres.
The price starts to ramp up.

Why do the parts cost so much?! As a percentage of the price of a whole bike, it sounds extortionate.

Sell the bike and buy another with the wheels you want. May cost you less in the long run.
