Preventative maintenance
« on: July 27, 2018, 16:17:27 »
I've now put 37000 miles on my k9 Wee, most of it touring France and Germany and half of that two up and fully loaded. I love the bike for a whole load of reasons, not least of which are its comfort and reliability. I've had it serviced religiously every 3500miles (by the excellent Carl Harrison of Harleston, Norfolk) and it's still in excellent nick. Apart from the usual oil, plugs, filters  and tyres, oh and a pair of fork seals, it's been completely trouble free.  However, with touring abroad so often, it might only be a matter of time before an issue arises which might be a little inconvenient. I guess my question to all Wee Strommers is, 'In your experience is there anything that might be likely to cause an unexpected issue with a bike of this age and mileage and which it would be advisable to check or replace in order to preserve trouble free running?

You've not mentioned brake pads, or chain and sprockets. If they're still the originals, I'd be inclined to plan their replacement sooner rather than later. And a close check of wheel bearings wouldn't go amiss. But all reports seem to confirm that the VStroms of all types can rack up very high mileages very reliably!

Thanks for that. Forgive me, I forgot to mention that I've had a change of brake pads and just had a third chain and sprocket set fitted. I suppose bearings generally are certainly something else to consider.

Have the rear suspension linkages been checked and greased regularly?

Tends to be electrics that cause sudden stoppage. Been a few Regulator/ Rectifier failures recently.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

And the connectors above the radiator - if not already done it's a good idea to open all connectors and add ACF50, then get them covered in inner tubes to provide waterproofing  :fix:

And V Strom legend Greywolf always advised headlight relays

Brake fluid change too...
