Please tell me about pannier fittings
« on: May 12, 2018, 11:20:14 »
I want to get some hard panniers for my Glee - something I've never bought before so I'm a bit up in the air.

I appreciate that I need to buy the panniers and a model-specific mounting kit separately.  However, do these have to match up?  As in, if I buy Suzuki mounts, are they only for Suzuki panniers?  And similarly for Givi?  Or do they cross-match?

My (related) issue is that I'll be Euro-touring on the Glee this summer  but after that am most likely to be buying a second, larger machine most likely with OEM panniers, which would mean I'd not be touring with the Glee again and would want to offload its panniers as economically as possible (ie ideally buy then sell on ebay at minimal loss).

Thoughts and recommendations please?

Why not buy a set of Givi boxes (say trekker) and rack for your current bike and then when you buy your second bigger bike buy another rack from Givi that fits your current (trekker) boxes , then they would be interchangeable for both bikes and I'm sure buying a new bike without OEM panniers would save you far more than the extra rack you would need to buy ?  Just an idea .

Yeah thanks Kwackboy, I'm sure you're right there and I have certainly thought about that as it would be the obvious answer.  However I don't want another adventure-style bike (I intend to keep the Glee), but I do kind of want OEM panniers on the new machine (and my two currently preferred models are BMW F800GT and 1200RS would look a bit shite with trekkers!)

I get your point . I don't think Oem stuff is interchangeable with Givi so then I would look at what would sell quicker and not lose much money which in my opinion is Givi.

Not all GIVI panniers fit all their support racks so be wary what you choose. OEM would be more expensive (certainly not interchangable with after market systems) though I beleive KAPPA and GIVI share mounts. Anyone know if that's a fact? Worth looking into.
So how's it going so far then?

The Suzuki std Glee panniers are very wide, over a metre, and filtering is a non starter. Saying that though they are a good size and pretty waterproof.
After two years of doing a weeks tour in Scotland with standard panniers and topbox I am looking at getting a bigger topbox from the Heppco & Bekker people Moto-Bins at Spalding which will fit my Suzuki rack and leaving the panniers at home unless I’m away for longer or with my wife in future.
The topbox prices are very reasonable when they aren’t being sold by Suzuki so if you want the Suzuki panniers it maybe cheaper to go through them anyway.

The standard Suzuki luggage is the Journey range in H&B speak.

Yes, I have Givi panniers, and their stuff is compatible with kappa - same company, I believe. Not compatible wih Suzy stuff.
The panniers go bike to bike over the years, just need to buy new racks and sometimes a plate for topbox (though these usually just transfer across).
Old style I have is PL frames, new style (which 'hug' the bike more are plx (but smaller choice of panniers to fit, V35's I believe).

Thanks everybody this is really helpful.
Reckon I'll be buying some new Givi racks (which seem hard to source second-hand) and then keep my eyes open for a pair of half-decent Givi panniers on eBay, with a view to selling it all on later in the year.

I have the Givi Trekker luggage, so far it has been fitted to an XT1200z, a Wee and now a Glee. The quality is way better than the OE offerings.
