Moving screen fixing grommets
« on: March 02, 2018, 21:03:08 »
I thought it would be easy to change the fixing positions for the screen on my bike........was I surprised! (Reason for this will be revealed shortly)

Both Haynes and Owners manuals say "Remove screws, take off screen.......reposition fixing grommets in desired position...... refit screen."

Errr, no.  You have to push the grommets into the fairing and let them drop out (or catch them). They are thicker on the hidden nut side so won't just push through from the front. Understandably there isn't enough hand room up the inside of the fairing past the headlamps so you have to dismantle the bodywork inside the cockpit and detach the instrument block to gain access and push the grommets back from the inside.

Hmmmm.......anyone else had the same experience?
So how's it going so far then?

Pretty sure mine just pulled out the front. I did lose one so got some more from Halfrauds. I know the new one just pushed in so must come out the same way,

Its best to remove screen , pull out gromets with fingers . Position blanks in desired position  ,then asemble screen with spacers & gromets as one . Push through holes & tighten . This is the simple way  I do it .

Thanks Rusty, but getting them out wasn't the problem. The ones on my AL5 has a michelin man rubber ring around the nut. It pushes into the fairing no problem but impossible to push them back in from outside, they were hard enough simply forcing the thinner side  back through to the outside.
So how's it going so far then?

I have an AL5 and followed the advice in Rusty’s article. I took the screen off then pulled the well nuts very carefully out with some long nose pliers. Popped them in a mug of boiling water and you do see them pop back into shape. This also softened them allowing them to be pushed back in from the front.
