Wiring colours?
« on: February 06, 2018, 20:30:55 »
2017 DL650.  I am trying to trace the wire to the brake light. The harness runs down the near side and is well attached and routed, so I don't really want to pull it all out to find the wires. Does anyone know what colours the brake light wires are?

And while I'm asking, what is the black plastic box, in front of the light, with two rubber pipes going to it?

Is there a wiring diagram anywhere?

In DL1000 that would be orange wire with green stripe (2 pin plug) under tank but in DL650 hard to say.. I guess you are looking for switched +12v?

The plug for the brake light is on the right hand side of the frame OUTSIDE of the frame member about level with the battery. .

Orange/green was the power to the brake light switch on older models. The new ones are white/green. The power wire to the brake light itself from the switch is white with a black stripe.

Thanks all. At the risk of starting a storm of mockery and abuse - I am fitting one of those brake light flashy light things . Yes I have read the comments, but I think they are a good idea. It does nothing until sharp breaking is detected then the sensor is triggered.
If that stops a chav rear ending me then it's worth the £9 I paid. It is road legal and will not effect the mot so what the hell.

What do you want a picture of, the little black box, or it fitted?

Not fitted it yet, but will try and get round to it tomorrow.
The Amazon page has a little video in the comments section.

It sits just under the cross frame, next to my alarm and in front of the plastic box with two pipes entering it (which I haven't a clue to its purpose!). It is wired just before the plug connector. One red +ve to the ign side white with black tracer wire. The other red +ve to the stop light side of the white with black tracer wire. The negative black wire is connected to the black with white tracer. All joints soldered and heat shrinked. The module comes with wire connectors, which I didn't use preferring soldered joints.
The module also comes with wiring to connect it to a 9v battery to test the unit before fitting.
The module has to be sited flat horizontal with the arrow facing forward, so that the decelerometer is in the right direction.
It has a sticky pad supplied and mine fits snugly under the cross piece of the frame.

Just a note.
The white with black tracer on the rhs next to the battery is from the foot brake only and will not operate the unit from the hand brake. This wire crosses over the frame and joins the front brake wire which then has a plug socket just a little further back on lhs. This wiring was extremely fiddly to get at and I ended up removing the rack and rear plastic cover to release the loom which has 2 frame plastics attachments otherwise preventing it from being raised enough to unplug and join the wires.

The plug has:-
black with white tracer - neutral
white with black tracer - stop light
brown - rear light

The white/black wire is also connected to the front brake switch in stock condition. The front brake switch and rear brake switch have their white/black wires meet in an area under the tank inside the loom where you don't see it. Unless a wire or the front brake light switch was broken somehow or you cut the wire, either brake will activate the brake light.

I disconnected the socket on the rhs, next to the battery. The light did not illuminate  with the rear brake, but did with the front brake, so I connected the device on the lhs near the back, in front of the 3 wire socket there.

So do both front and rear brakes work the brake light when you got finished? I imagine that would be an MOT failure if they don't. Disconnecting the socket on the right would take the rear brake switch off line. Reconnecting it would make it work again. A plug and play type of device will allow you to separate a connector and have plugs on the new device to connect to each half of the separated connector. Both the front brake lever and rear brake pedal must be able to light the brake light.

If I had used the wire on the rhs I would have had only one brake working the light. By the time the loom reaches the the rhs at the back it is both front and back. This is where I connected it. I have both brakes working the light and wouldn't have connected it so only one was functioning.

As long as both brakes work the light I'll leave it at that.
