Might I comment to Mr GreyWolf the Petter Harmonic diesel engine? ... a largish uniflow-scavenge two-stroke diesel that doesn't rely on crankcase compression, or an external "blower", for scavenging, but uses instead the "organ pipe" dynamics of tuned length exhaust. (Actually, it does have a changeover valve to use crankcase compression for starting purposes, but the "harmonic" effect is used at the normal running speed). Perhaps the ultimate application of the Kadenacy effect?
