V Strom 1000 2017 2 pin indicator relay position
« on: August 25, 2017, 21:55:07 »
I was hoping to change the indicator relay as I have some very bright led bulbs off my old bike, but I would like to just change the relay rather than add resistors. Probably cheaper and a lot neater too.
Unlike the bikes with the 7 pin relay behind the tank, I can't find the dam relay on my bike. Tried listening for the click click of the bimetallic contacts, nothing. No mention of it on the web. Don't fancy stripping the body work without a clue where it might live. Help. I know it's just a relay swap as the OEM led kit mentions it, but no fitting instructions!  :groan:

It's #11 in the picture on a 2014 and I imagine that's the same for 2017/8.

Nope! Nothing under mine looks like that. Searched all the local nooks and crannies, looks like some panels to be removed and or the tank, in the elusive search. The abs sits where the battery sat, that has now moved up.

It's starting to look like under the bonnet of a new car. Time to take off some plastic. If they haven't changed the wire colours, there should be a small box under there with a blight blue wire and a brown wire.

How helpful is your local Suzuki dealer? You could always go and ask.

And maybe beyond the dealer's knowledge. Anyway, we need somebody to do a picture with labels on the under seat area of the new bike.

I didn't expect 2017 would have relay in position different then 2014. I'll have my new 2017 in less then a month and as I plan to remove my Suzuki LED indicators from my 2014 and put them on 2017, I guess I'll have to put the dealer look for the relay before I leave the showroom with my new bike.

Look here, it's item number 20, but I guess it doesn't help much about location:

Easy way out.
Looks like removing the tank is not so easy, and still need to track the relay. So I had a look at the rear indicator connector. This is much the same as the original wiring diagram from 2014. It is fairly easy to connect a resistor across LH and RH side of the indicators. A 6 ohm 20 watt resistor on each side will do the trick.
Close up of the rear indicator and licence plate light wiring diagram with positions of the resistors in the circuit.
And picture of the connector behind seat lock. There is underneath the indicator connector a taped up connector, and in front, other taped up connectors and what looks like the diagnostic connector, now what are they for?

Forget the dots. They are not part of the color code. I think they help when cutting the wires to length. The connector is the dealer mode coupler. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,7061.0.html

I assume the connector with the foam is the dealer connector, OK but what is the black taped up connector under the indicator/licence lights connector. Is that also a dealer diagnostic connector?
Also I have found our 2017/8 uses 21Watt indicators, I'm sure when I took the bulbs out they were 10W.
So that puts my diagram out. It should show 6 ohm 50 watt resistors not the 20 watt they would get very hot!
So revised diagram showing the 50w resistors. I wired them up to show how much brighter they are, though the picture does not do them justice. My desktop pc also gave up the ghost so no Photoshop, hence some crappy windows editing software.
I am still looking for that elusive indicator relay, not given up yet!

If it has all black wires, it is a diagnostic connector unique to UK bikes. The wires lead to standard bike wires of various colors. I would guess such connector is used to lessen the time for an MOT check.

Forgot to mention the left indicator is LED right is the standard 21w, picture does not really show how much brighter it is.

I've just been at my dealer. My new DL1000 has arrived and I asked him about relay location problem as I'm going to put my Suzuki LED indicators on new bike and I have OEM relay for them too. He looked at usual place where it's located on '14 model, and yes, it's not there. Then he went into shop's service online manuals and found the photo of the relay. It's bellow the battery, hanging on one big plastic box (I don't know what the box is). He looked from bellow and found that if you remove the plastic held by two clips on its sides, there was access to the relay or you can do it by removing the battery. Without removing the plastic he could touch the relay with the tip of his fingers.
I don't know if you've installed the resistors already. If you haven't, I hope this helps a bit.

I've just replaced the relay on my 2017 DL1000. It wasn't easy to find it but once I've found it, it wasn't that hard to do it.
It's not where it was on '14. To get to it, you have to remove the battery, lift the fuse box and then unscrew the plastic bellow the battery. It's held by 3 vertical screws then 2 more horizontal screws on each side, screwed into the subframe. Then, there are still 2 clips accessed from the wheel arch.
Job done.

Once you get to the relay, you will have the option of replacing the oem two pin with an electronic 2 pin or if you take the factory upgrade led they give you a 3 pin.
Pin 31 is earth - ve You have to run an extra wire to earth.
pin 49 + battery
49a L  indicators or lights
On the 2 pin
+ battery
L indicators

Do not confuse L with Live it is NOT.

Thank you but you're responding to 7 months old thread, already solved... 7 months ago, as you could see in previous text. And the question was not which relay, or how... It was the location of the relay on the bike.
