Service Frequency
« on: August 03, 2017, 17:00:17 »
Hi. I know this is probably a hugely open ended questions but how often should I get my VStrom 1000 serviced?

I have had it a year and probably only don't 3500 miles. I had its first service at 1000miles as suggested by the dealer.

But how often should I take it in for a service (I'm not very mechanically minded)

Thanks,

Didn't you get a manual? If it is new, you need to follow the manual to maintain the warranty. First service at 600 miles is typical though. Dealers often suggest service more often than the manual so you really need to check the manual.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

I emailed Suzuki on this very issue as I noticed an addendum for the DL1000 in the publications section of this site. The manual states 4000 mile service intervals while the addendum says 7500.

Suzuki confirmed that the 7500 mile interval is the correct one.

Suzuki changed to a longer oil change interval while the L5 models were out. If an earlier bike is out of warranty, the longer interval can safely be used with synthetic oil. The bike hasn't changed, the recommendation has.

Despite What Suzuki says I'd throw in an oil change half way through that mileage.
I personally think 4000 miles is enough before you change the oil although a good synthetic oil will last that long

I like every 5000 Mls.as in 5,10,15,20k,easy to remember,no keep checking when you did it last.I do the same for the car, even though it has 8000 ml. oil change periods.

I change the oil in my Veek every 3000 miles and the filter every other change and only use a semi synthetic,  bike runs fine.
If your bike is now a yesr old it needs another service or at least an oil change. Service intervals are 7500 miles or 12 months whichever comes firdt. Also more than likely at the 600 mile first service the dealer will not have used a high quality oil, just the workshop oil,  semi syn at best. Mine used a mineral oil.
