How many miles to a tank
« on: July 19, 2017, 12:52:12 »
Hi I have a K7 1000 and just interested to know how many miles your getting to a tank? Me between 135 and 145 tops, I do have after market end cans and a power commander my riding style is mixed I'm to old to be a boy racer.

so is that about right or do I have some thing wrong?

Thanks Graham

Mines a standard bike and normally first flashy petrol warning comes between 170-180 second flashy warning about 190. Never normally go over 200 before refill. But was in Scotland last year in the highlands and I was twitching at 226 but that was steady riding and speed limits all the way.

My old K6 Vee had pipes and a power commander,  I used to get a around 160-190 Depending how I rode , that was fully loaded 2 up .

Most I got from a 54plate DL1000 was 235 mile but that was near empty. Most I've got from the Wee is 315

05 KLV here, most I've chanced is 181 miles, that was fully loaded and my son on the back. It was on the 2nd blinking warning light and I was nervous.

Took about 17 and a half litres to fill it up, so still had a bit left in the tank. Oh, and it has MTC cans and a Power Commander on it.

so is that about right or do I have some thing wrong?

It might be to do with your power commander.
Did you have it set up on a dyno or did you just use the map that was installed?
The power commander can be programmed for better performance or economy so a different map may make all the difference.
Naturally if you get it set up on a dyno it will cost £££'s but may repay itself in better economy in time. You could always disconnect the P/C and see what difference it makes. There are usually maps available to download to suit the end can etc, might take a bit of hunting to find one.

It could be down to your riding style and how much town riding you do, it could also indicate a blocked air filter, knackered spark plugs etc - I had a bike serviced even though I thought it was fine and my mpg went from 32 to 46 and I still rode like an idiot!

One up touring in France 200miles+ to a tank
Two up touring in France around 180miles to a tank

My K7 had full dealer service history to 10,000m when I bought her and yet the air filter had never been cleaned or changed it was minging as mentioned previously mpg increased after I changed it.

During 'normal use', commuting and general running around my Glee  shows 50mpg on the dash and I fill up at 200-220 miles.
While riding across France recently I was usually covering 360km, so 225 miles before filling up, and then putting 17ish litres in. So fully loaded, two-up and riding with 'purpose' if not completely flat out, it was returning 60+mpg. So would probably have done another 45 miles before spluttering to a halt.
Taking it 'steady' the fuel consumption is mad, (I led my wife home as she drove an unfamiliar car a couple of weeks ago) we went normal speeds on the 150 miles trip, but I was accelerating and braking gently, the bike average over 75mpg.
What a great tool it is  :thumb:

My K7 Vee gave over 180 miles a tank with some to spare except when really caned. Best tank 238, worst tank 135 (was playing with an R1 and a CBR1000 - they were gobsmacked at the pull of the Vee out of tight bends...lol). Around 45mpg = around 200 a tank. All one-up, although I weigh as much as two skinny folk. However, I stopped going for over 200 mile tanks when I ran dry at 205 miles, thinking I had enough to get me to the next petrol station. It never really changed over the 8 years of ownership except when I went touring on the continent, all the steady miles made it rise to over 50mpg.

OK so my Strom has a drinking problem,  :obscene-drinkingchug:

I have ordered a new air filter new set of plugs is there anything else you think would help, The bike has 15k with history, The map I got from dynojet website may have a look around for a better one! unfortunately there are no dyno to set the bike up on in Cornwall (well don't think so anyway)

Thanks for all your info

Just phoned them 5 weeks waiting  £225+vat for a custom map (power commander) but the bloke recommends to remap the standard ecu as Kawasaki done this under warranty with there KLV @ a cost of 120+vat, but I shouldn't expect no more than 160/170 to a tank.

How about throttle body sync, is that a thing on the 2007 V strom 1000's, or does it just affect idle setting.

I had a mate come round and sync up the carbs on my old Hornet 600 (which was running just fine beforehand BTW) and that alone added almost 10 mpg!

That's funny you say that I checked them the other night and they where a little bit out not a lot but a little but never had side cover off to adjust.
