2003 Vee- slight leak
« on: May 22, 2017, 19:57:14 »
Hi all,  when the bike is parked I have a tiny coolant leak from the hose that attached to the 90 degree pipe in the picture below. Presumbly that is due to a leaking water pump seal? If so, is it much of a job to change one?

It requires taking off the cover on that side. Here is a link to doing it on a 650 which is very similar. https://blacklabadventures.com/2012/02/22/rebuilding-the-water-pump/

Thanks, that's a very comprehensive article. Looks a slightly awkward job.

I replaced a water pump because it had skin cancer. It looks like the Vee pump isn't available as a unit like my Wee's was.

Is the rubber tube blocked at the lower end? Mine had a dribble a few weeks back on closer inspection the bottom of the rubber tube was almost blocked with crud. Cleaned it out with a long wooden skewer (it was a kebab stick I pinched from the kitchen) and its been fine since.

A blocked hose will not cause a drip. Freeing up the hose may have freed up the drip so it isn't as noticeable but the fact that there was a drip indicates a compromised seal. But, it's not unheard of for a bit of crud to get trapped and cause a small leak but later get washed out and stop leaking.
