Chain ... And sprockets?
« on: April 18, 2017, 14:37:00 »
So my chain has just decided to part company at about 10k miles. So I'm thinking a new chain rather than a fix.

But do folks always change sprockets with the chain? Both, or just front? The front sprocket looks a bit worn but not loads, but the rear looks almost perfect...

I may be wrong but for the extra that it may cost I think it's wise to do both. Don't really see the point in using a new chain on old sprockets even if they "appear" OK.

I changed mine at 35.000 km. Both sprockets were as new, but I do agree that it's better to change them all together with the chain.

Change the lot. Otherwise you could end up having to faff about changing the sprockets with a decent chain on. And....a slightly worn sprocket will reduce the life of a new chain.

Thanks all.

You confirm what I was thinking. But I wanted to be sure I wasn't being duped into spending my hard-earned cash on unnecessary bits!

Just noticed that my front sprocket is getting well worn, I had the sprocket cover of for cleaning the chain and the teeth are starting to look sharp and a bit 'hooked' if that's the correct term.
At 25k miles I'm thinking maybe it's time to replace the oem chain and sprockets, though the chain and rear sprocket seem fine, the scottoiler certainly has done it's job,
any recommendations on the best set to get and where to buy? I'm thinking Wemoto, gold 525 x ring chain and JT or sunstar sprockets, might as well have her in top condition for the Summer.

Why don’t you just change the front sprocket if the other one plus chain are OK ? Save your beer tokens for a rainy day. :)

I have come to the conclusion that from now on I am going to change my front sprocket as soon as it shows any wear what so ever for the cost of about £6. This I think will increase the life span of the chain and thus the rear sprocket as well. I have always changed the lot in one go (see my previous reply on here) but now it just seems daft. The front sprocket is tiny so goes round a hell of a lot more times then the rear one, thus it wears out quicker and buggers the chain. Sooo....2x front should = 1x chain and rear sprocket. What do you lot think of them eggs?

"Have gun will travel"  :fix: so maybe put yourself up for hire at weekends eh?

This I think will increase the life span of the chain and thus the rear sprocket as well. What do you lot think of them eggs?

I see the logic but I think it's wrong. The simple reason is that the chain has already incurred wear and stretch even if visually the rear sprocket 'looks OK'. Quite simply the whole of the drive between engine and rear wheel has sought out it's own status quo with a certain amount of play in the rollers etc. and if it's kept in good order will wear evenly still. If you only put a new front sprocket on it the chain won't fit it properly causing a different pull effect at both ends which will increase wear and not keep the chain or rear sprocket in good condition longer. You might be doing more harm IMHO.

In the past chains and sprockets weren't seen as a complete kit to keep in good order together. The major reason is the chain is now continuous and you have to break it (or remove the swing arm) to change it. Before you could take the chain off to grease/change/replace it easily, often ignoring the state of the sprockets. Best thing is constant chain care which will prolong the life of the whole kit.  :icon_wink:
So how's it going so far then?

I always wondered if race teams change the chain every time they want to change the gearing for different situations or circuits.

A bit like stripping down a Top Fuel dragster between every run?

I reckon they have a roll of chain and lots of sprockets at every race.

Oh, and all the computer simulations............

Hi,

Will the rear sprocket for a 2017 DL650 be the same as for the 07 to 14 models?

As far as I can tell the dimensional data is the same.

Planning to get this:
